Job description

Who we're looking for

Fieldwire is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer with a focus on tooling and automation to ensure that Fieldwire can rapidly deploy new features and services to our growing user base. We are searching for a seasoned engineer to collaborate with our engineering teams to design and evolve a highly efficient, secure, and reliable system.

You will play a significant role in shaping the Fieldwire platform by identifying and championing process and infrastructure improvements, and by setting technical direction for the systems that support the entire engineering organization. As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will own the design, maintenance, and reliability of the cloud infrastructure and production systems that power our applications, which are critical for the construction teams that use Fieldwire to save time and money on the job site. You will also serve as a technical mentor to other engineers on the team and a key voice in platform architecture decisions.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you will own the health, scalability, and security of Fieldwire's production infrastructure while architecting the platform of the future. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, building, and automating the Software Development Lifecycle and Infrastructure that powers Fieldwire
  • Owning the reliability and performance of production systems, including leading incident response, driving root-cause analysis, and implementing preventative measures
  • Developing and maintaining monitoring, alerting, and observability systems to ensure maximum uptime and surface the metrics that inform engineering decisions
  • Leading the troubleshooting and resolution of complex issues related to application performance, scalability, and security across Fieldwire's systems
  • Setting technical direction and making architectural decisions for platform infrastructure, in collaboration with engineering leadership
  • Collaborating with and influencing engineering teams to build a platform that can scale to meet growing demand
  • Mentoring other engineers on infrastructure best practices, operational excellence, and secure system design
  • Driving continuous improvement of tooling, processes, and standards to protect and increase Fieldwire's development velocity
  • Participating in and helping lead an on-call rotation, with ownership of the processes around change and incident management

A day in the life of a Senior Platform Engineer will frequently involve solving these types of problems:

  • Leading IaC project work to develop and improve platform infrastructure, including reviewing designs proposed by other engineers
  • Designing, developing, and supporting tools and environments for internal teams
  • Operating and evolving production systems, including diagnosing and resolving live incidents
  • Supporting and advising on internal development tools and workflows

At Fieldwire, we're looking for our next Senior Platform Engineer to have the following skills and experiences:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
  • At least 5-7 years of experience as a Platform Engineer, DevOps Engineer, or SRE, including direct ownership of production systems
  • Expertise in at least one programming language such as Golang, Java, Python, Ruby, or Rust
  • Proven experience managing AWS cloud infrastructure and associated services relating to CI/CD at scale
  • Deep experience with Docker and containerization in production environments
  • Substantial experience participating in and leading an on-call rotation, responding to and resolving production incidents
  • Experience developing, refining, and driving adoption of processes around change and incident management
  • Strong command of Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), such as AWS CDK or Terraform, including designing reusable and secure IaC patterns
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor other engineers and influence technical decisions across teams

And if you have any of the following, we REALLY want you to apply today!

  • Familiarity with Rust and its ecosystem
  • Experience designing and operating CI/CD systems integrated across multiple accounts and regions
  • Experience with package management systems and strategy
  • A track record of leading cross-team infrastructure or reliability initiatives
  • Passion for solving unique and challenging problems

Compensation:

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows: $170,000 - $195,000
