Senior Cold Forming Engineer information

What are the main responsibilities of a senior cold forming engineer?

A Senior Cold Forming Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing cold forming processes used to shape metal parts without the application of heat. They oversee tooling design, production planning, and quality control to ensure efficient and precise manufacturing. Additionally, they troubleshoot process issues, implement improvements, and work closely with cross-functional teams to meet production and product requirements. Their expertise is crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, where high-volume metal parts are needed.

What are some of the key challenges senior cold forming engineers face when optimizing production processes, and how can they address these challenges?

Senior Cold Forming Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing process efficiency with product quality, especially when working with new materials or complex geometries. They must frequently troubleshoot tooling issues, minimize material waste, and ensure consistent output while adhering to tight tolerances. Addressing these challenges involves close collaboration with design, quality, and maintenance teams, as well as leveraging advanced simulation software and continuous process improvement methodologies. Staying updated on industry trends and investing in ongoing professional development can also help engineers overcome production hurdles more effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior cold forming engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Cold Forming Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of materials science, metal forming processes, and mechanical engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering. Expertise in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (like DEFORM or Forge), and familiarity with industry standards and certifications (such as Six Sigma or ISO) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership, and effective communication set top performers apart in cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the design, optimization, and quality production of cold-formed components, driving efficiency and product excellence in manufacturing environments.

What is the difference between Senior Cold Forming Engineer vs Cold Forming Technician?

AspectSenior Cold Forming EngineerCold Forming Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering; experience in cold forming processesHigh school diploma or technical certification; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesign, process optimization, project management in manufacturing settingsOperating cold forming machinery, quality inspection, routine maintenance
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping processes, improving efficiency, overseeing productionSetting up machines, performing production runs, basic troubleshooting

The Senior Cold Forming Engineer typically has a higher level of education and focuses on process development and optimization, while the Cold Forming Technician handles day-to-day machine operation and maintenance. Both roles are essential in cold forming manufacturing but differ in scope and expertise.

Job description

Job Description: At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money โ€” we're here to move our global customers forward. We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career โ€” we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.

About the Role:

Remitly is building the Remitly Global Card, a card and wallet that give customers a single, trusted place to hold, spend, and move their money, launching across multiple geographies. As a Senior Full Stack Engineer on the Global Card team, you will own features end to end: the screens customers see, the APIs behind them, and the services that issue cards, hold balances, and move money. You will serve as a key technical voice on a cross-functional team that moves fast and builds with AI in the loop every day, agentic coding tools are part of how we work, not a side experiment, while holding the correctness and trust bar a regulated money product demands. You will report to the Engineering Manager and work in a hybrid capacity from our Arlington, VA office.

You Will:

  • Set the technical standard: Design and write code that is well-tested, resilient, extensible, and scalable โ€” setting the quality bar for the team and making it easy for others to contribute.
  • Lead team projects: Break down complex features into parallel workstreams, provide delivery estimates, and drive execution from design through launch with a high degree of independence.
  • Guide engineering excellence: Uphold and exemplify Foundational Excellence standards โ€” including security, reliability, observability, and quality โ€” and proactively identify and resolve risks before they become incidents.
  • Mentor and grow the team: Guide and mentor SDE peers through code reviews, design reviews, and retrospectives. Represent Remitly's cultural values and technical competencies in interviews.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and other engineering teams to translate customer needs into scalable technical solutions and deliver on shared outcomes.
  • Communicate with clarity: Effectively articulate complex technical problems, trade-offs, and proposals to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

You Have:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Expertise in one or more backend or full-stack programming languages (e.g., Go, Kotlin, Java, TypeScript) and the ability to adapt to new languages and frameworks as needed.
  • Experience designing secure, scalable, and performant software using cloud-based infrastructure solutions (e.g., AWS).
  • Experience leading projects at the team level, including breaking features into parallel workstreams, estimating timelines, and coaching other engineers through mentoring, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity in product requirements, technical design, and cross-team dependencies while driving decisions to resolution.
  • Ability to articulate best practices for error handling, observability, and operational excellence.
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.

Compensation Details. The starting base salary range for this position is typically $180,000-$225,000.
