Position: School Security Officer      Days: As needed

Salary: TBD          Status: Non-exempt Classified

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Facilitate 100% attendance of each and every student in the school and to serve as the school safety/security officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE POSITION:

  1. Maintain respect at all times for confidential information.
  2. Monitor the interior and exterior of the Hammond Academy campus. It is the expectation that the Officer is continually monitoring the building and its occupants.
  3. Control unauthorized persons on school property.
  4. Act as a role model within and outside Hammond Academy of Science & Technology.
  5. Represent the school district to the Safety Commission or make recommendations to that individual.
  6. Work with the School Safety Specialists in the school to maintain a safe and secure school and be a member of the school Safety Committee.
  7. Attend School Safety Specialist training and obtain certification.
  8. Coordinate the issuance of visitor's tags.
  9. Help establish a security system for the building.
  10. Be informed about the school's dress code.
  11. Strictly monitor dress code and report all violations to the Dean of Students.
  12. Assist the Dean and other administrators with discipline issues if necessary.
  13. Understand that the security of the building is paramount to personal relationships with staff and/or students.
  14. Provide recommendations to the administration on security.
  15. Conduct and coordinate proper searches of the interior and exterior of the building on a regular basis.
  16. Follow up on leads of illegal possessions.
  17. Be the liaison between the school and Hammond Police Department.
  18. Assist the school with policy adherence, including but not limited to cellular phones, illegal articles brought into the school, dress, etc. and make relevant and active resolution that reflects natural consequences.
  19. Perform all other duties assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Perfect position for a retired law enforcement officer and has a law enforcement degree or certificate. Must have an operational knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, financial and student programs, organizational and time management skills, professional telephone and public relations skills.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED with law enforcement degree or certificate and experience as a law enforcement officer.

Language Skills: Adequate verbal and written language skills. Ability to read and interpret documents including, but not limited to, operation, and maintenance manuals. Ability to communicate with non-law enforcement personnel. Ability to write routine reports and complete necessary paperwork.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform four basic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in whole numbers, fractions and decimals. 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to prioritize tasks, solve problems, and carry out instructions provided in written, oral or diagram form.

Other Skills and Abilities: General computer operational skills. Ability to perform duties and demonstrate awareness of school requirements and policies. Communicate effectively with the students, parents, and staff. Be a role model for the students. 

Physical Demands: The officer is expected to continually patrol teh interior and exterior of the HAST campus. Breaks will be provided at appropriate times during the work day, but the officer is never to sit in the offic or location without the permission of the building administrator.

Working Environment/Conditions: The work environment characteristics are those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Responsibilities are completed primarily in the school office. Noise levels from general activity and office machines are moderate.
