Senior Climate Modeling information

How do Senior Climate Modelers typically collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on large-scale research projects?

Senior Climate Modelers often work closely with scientists from fields such as oceanography, atmospheric science, and data analytics to develop comprehensive climate simulations. They play a key role in integrating diverse datasets, providing technical expertise, and translating complex model outputs for non-specialist stakeholders. Effective collaboration requires strong communication skills and a willingness to bridge knowledge gaps between disciplines, which can be both challenging and highly rewarding as it leads to more robust and impactful research findings.

What is the difference between Senior Climate Modeling vs Climate Data Analyst?

AspectSenior Climate ModelingClimate Data Analyst
Required CredentialsAdvanced degrees in climate science, meteorology, or related fields; experience with modeling softwareBachelor's or master's in environmental science, data analysis, or related fields; proficiency in data tools
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, government agencies, or environmental organizations; focus on developing modelsData-focused roles in similar settings; analyze climate data for trends and reports
Employer & Industry UsageResearch institutions, government agencies, NGOsEnvironmental consulting firms, government agencies, research institutions

While both roles involve climate data, Senior Climate Modeling focuses on developing complex climate models and simulations, requiring advanced technical skills. Climate Data Analysts interpret existing data sets to identify trends and support decision-making. The roles differ mainly in scope and technical depth but share a common industry environment and credentials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Climate Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Climate Modeler, you need advanced expertise in climate science, numerical modeling, and data analysis, typically backed by a PhD in atmospheric science, meteorology, or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python, Fortran, or R), climate modeling software (like WRF, CESM, or GCMs), and high-performance computing is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication of complex results make professionals stand out in this field. These skills are vital for developing accurate climate projections, informing policy, and advancing scientific understanding of climate change.

What does a Senior Climate Modeler do?

A Senior Climate Modeler is responsible for developing, running, and analyzing advanced climate models to understand and predict changes in Earth's climate. They use complex computer simulations to assess the impact of various factors like greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and ocean currents on climate systems. These professionals often lead research projects, collaborate with scientists across disciplines, and provide critical insights for policymakers and organizations working to address climate change. Their work helps improve climate predictions and informs strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate risks.

Job description

Join Fehr & Peers and help shape the future of transportation through innovative travel behavior analysis, forecasting, and Big Data. We are seeking an experienced Senior Travel Behavior & Demand Forecasting Specialist who is passionate about solving complex challenges and creating data driven transportation solutions for communities across the United States.

At Fehr & Peers, you'll work alongside travel behavior forecasting experts in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment where creativity, technical excellence, and innovation are highly valued. Our team combines advanced travel demand modeling, statistical analysis, and Big Data to answer critical planning and policy questions.

We are known for applying thoughtful, robust, and practical approaches that produce intuitive and actionable insights for our clients. We partner with MPOs, municipalities, transit agencies, private and institutional developers, technology firms, and civil engineering companies to tackle some of the industry's most complex transportation challenges. From special event planning and evacuation analysis to climate resilience and long-range forecasting, our work directly influences transportation investments and community outcomes nationwide.

Successful candidates will have experience developing and implementing travel demand, statistical, and data driven forecasting models to analyze multimodal transportation systems and emerging mobility trends. They should be comfortable working with traditional modeling tools as well as Big Data platforms and methods and enjoy exploring innovative approaches to improve forecasting accuracy and decision making.

In this role, you will serve as a trusted technical advisor to project managers and clients alike. You'll contribute expertise across a wide range of projects, lead key modeling and analytical tasks to deliver tailored forecasting solutions that help communities plan for a rapidly evolving transportation future.

Responsibilities
  • Manage task delivery as the subject matter expert, overseeing staff, deliverables, budget, and schedule for modeling and forecasting tasksย
  • Think both critically and intuitively through the progression of projects to clearly understand the results and identify insights as to how they are important to the big picture in each unique projectย
  • Develop high-quality relationships with staff, clients, and modeling software vendors
  • Mentor and grow the skills of modeling/forecasting staff through projects and trainingsย
  • Conceptualize and deliver approaches to analyzing complex transportation planning or engineering problems dealing with all travel modesย
  • Apply knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of transportation planning, travel demand forecasting, travel behavior analysis, and data analysisย
  • Maintain a highly functional understanding of transportation forecasting software programs, such as CUBE, Emme,ย TransCAD, and Visum, and skills to apply these programs on projects, train others, and contribute to companywide knowledge baseย
  • Use statistical and data science software such as Python and R to collate, clean, and analyze large data sets
  • Use a variety of other software programs to help visualize results for audiences at varying levels of technical complexityย
  • Participate in travel forecasting research through our Forecasting discipline groupย
  • Prepare papers and presentations for technical conferences
  • Support marketing efforts through preparation of scopes, cost proposals and participation in intelligence gathering activities
Qualifications
  • 7-10+ years of professional work experience in travel demand modeling and travel behavior forecasting (CUBE and TransCAD strongly preferred)
  • Direct experience with regional models is highly desirable (SCAG, SANDAG, OCTA, SACOG, MTC, WFRC)
  • Master's or bachelor's degree in transportation, civil engineering, or related majorย
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, with strong writing, verbal, non-verbal, and presentation skillsย
  • Ability to delegate work, manage small teams and oversee budgetsย
  • Experience with the development and application of four-step travel demand models, tour-based models, and activity-based models including knowledge of basic statistical concepts and data analysis techniquesย
  • Experience with big data for transportation analysis (Replica and StreetLight preferred)
  • Comfort with working beyond the model: understanding limitations, applying the big picture, and generating innovative ideasย
  • Ability to translate the results of complex analysis to clients in appealing and intuitive waysย
  • Computer and database programming and scripting skills (Python, C++, R, VBA, Access, or similar) and proficiency with GISย
  • Interest in experimenting with and deploying AI tools to expand the effectiveness, efficiency, and/or creativity of our travel modeling practiceย
