What does a senior certification engineer do?

A Senior Certification Engineer is responsible for ensuring that products, systems, or processes meet industry standards and regulatory requirements. They coordinate the certification process, prepare documentation, and liaise with regulatory bodies to achieve compliance. Their work is crucial in industries like aerospace, automotive, and electronics, where adherence to safety and quality standards is mandatory. Senior Certification Engineers also mentor junior staff and help guide project teams through complex certification procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior certification engineer?

To excel as a Senior Certification Engineer, you need deep knowledge of regulatory standards, engineering principles, and certification processes, often backed by a degree in engineering and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with compliance management tools, technical documentation systems, and certifications like FAA DER or EASA CVE is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with regulatory agencies and cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure accurate certification, regulatory compliance, and the safe, efficient introduction of products to market.

What are some common challenges faced by senior certification engineers during the approval process for new products?

Senior Certification Engineers often navigate complex regulatory frameworks and evolving standards when certifying new products. Challenges can include interpreting ambiguous requirements, coordinating with cross-functional teams to gather necessary documentation, and managing tight project timelines. Additionally, they may need to communicate with regulatory bodies and third-party labs to resolve compliance issues, ensuring all technical and safety standards are met before product launch. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills are essential for overcoming these challenges efficiently.

Job description

Position: Senior Quality Engineer
Reports To: Quality Manager
Location: Holland, MI
People First. Safety is the Foundation. Quality is the Standard.
Drive Quality Excellence. Lead Critical Launches. Shape the Future of Manufacturing at Motus.
At Motus, we don’t just manufacture automotive products . . . we build processes, partnerships, and solutions that drive world-class performance. We are seeking a passionate, hands-on Senior Quality Engineer who thrives in fast-paced manufacturing environments and is energized by solving complex challenges, leading critical launches, and driving continuous improvement across the organization.
This is more than a traditional quality role. It’s an opportunity to become a key technical leader within our manufacturing operations, influencing product launches, strengthening customer relationships, improving operational performance, and helping elevate Motus to the next level.
As a Senior Quality Engineer, you’ll play a critical role at the center of engineering, manufacturing, launch, suppliers, and customer teams. You will lead Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities, drive problem-solving initiatives, support manufacturing excellence, and ensure our products consistently meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
We’re looking for someone who is highly energized, resourceful, analytical, and driven to make an impact — a leader who embraces challenges, thrives under pressure, and is passionate about building robust quality systems that support operational excellence.
What You’ll Do
  • Lead all customer-specific APQP activities throughout product launch and production readiness
  • Partner closely with Launch, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Supplier teams to ensure successful program execution and flawless launches
  • Drive quality planning activities including Process Flow Diagrams, PFMEA, Control Plans, PPAP submissions, PSO readiness, and corrective action implementation
  • Proactively identify risks, resolve critical issues, and ensure launch deliverables are completed on time
  • Serve as a key quality leader supporting customers, suppliers, manufacturing operations, and internal cross-functional teams
  • Lead structured problem-solving activities using methodologies such as 8D, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement tools
  • Maintain APQP documentation and support customer-required reporting and submissions
  • Manage gaging requirements, fixture development, and Gage R amp;R validation activities
  • Support certification audits and promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that improve quality performance, reduce customer complaints, and strengthen manufacturing processes
  • Support customer notifications and quality communications in accordance with customer-specific requirements (CSR)
  • Ensure compliance with automotive quality standards, customer requirements, and regulatory expectations
  • Provide support across multiple shifts as needed to ensure operational and launch success
What Makes You Successful
  • You are energized by solving problems and improving processes
  • You thrive in fast-paced manufacturing environments where urgency and adaptability matter
  • You combine technical expertise with strong communication and collaboration skills
  • You take ownership, drive accountability, and work with a strong sense of purpose
  • You are highly organized and capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously
  • You enjoy working cross-functionally and influencing teams toward common goals
  • You bring a continuous improvement mindset and a passion for operational excellence
  • You remain calm under pressure and focus on solutions, not obstacles
Minimum Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or related field
  • 5+ years of quality engineering experience within a manufacturing environment; automotive experience strongly preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of automotive quality core tools including APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, Control Plans, Process Flow Diagrams, PSO, SPC, and MSA
  • Experience leading customer launch and quality activities in automotive manufacturing
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD amp;T, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and customers
  • Ability to travel up to 20%
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • IATF 16949 internal auditor certification or related quality certifications
  • Experience working with molding systems and automotive interior components
  • Experience supporting customer audits, supplier quality activities, and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Familiarity with Chinese CCC certification requirements and compliance processes
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies
Why Motus?
At Motus, your work matters. You won’t be just another engineer maintaining systems — you’ll be a critical leader helping drive launch success, operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and the future growth of our manufacturing organization.
This is an opportunity to work on high-impact programs, collaborate with talented teams, influence meaningful improvements, and build a career where your ideas, leadership, and problem-solving abilities make a visible difference every day.
If you’re ready to take ownership, solve complex challenges, and help build world-class manufacturing quality systems, we’d love to hear from you.
