OVERVIEW
Join our team as a Senior Batch Engineer!
This is a hybrid role based out of our Maumee, OH office. The position is salaried and includes eligibility for overtime pay.
The Senior Batch Engineer is a senior-level automation professional responsible for designing, configuring, testing, commissioning, and supporting batch control solutions for manufacturing clients. This role requires strong process controls experience, practical knowledge of ISA-88 batch concepts, and the ability to translate process requirements into reliable, maintainable automation solutions.
Project work involves a variety of clients in multiple industries using batch management platforms, DCS/PLC-based control systems, HMI/SCADA applications, historians, and integration technologies. The Senior Batch Engineer interfaces with clients, operations teams, project managers, and internal engineering disciplines to develop functional specifications, configure batch recipes and phases, support software testing, and lead successful system start-ups
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Learn and follow industry, Matrix, and client safety practices and procedures. Help supervise site-team safety responsibilities and support compliance with company and client site safety policies.
  • Learn and follow Matrix Standards and Procedures. Mentor others in their use and participate in continuous improvement of batch automation standards, templates, and reusable deliverables.
  • Apply Matrix Project Methodology with an emphasis on software development, batch system implementation, testing, commissioning, and automation best practices.
  • Lead or support the development of project scopes of work, preliminary design concepts, cost estimates, schedules, and technical assumptions for batch automation projects.
  • Gather field data, review existing control system designs, and develop functional specifications, control narratives, batch design documents, configuration requirements, and test plans.
  • Design, configure, and support ISA-88-based batch solutions including recipes, unit procedures, operations, phases, equipment modules, procedural logic, prompts, parameters, reports, and exception handling.
  • Develop or coordinate DCS/PLC code, HMI graphics, batch interfaces, historian integration, and communications with external computing platforms as required by the project scope.
  • Lead software development and testing activities including design reviews, code reviews, software Factory Acceptance Tests, Site Acceptance Tests, commissioning, start-up, and post-start-up support.
    • Troubleshoot batch execution issues, recipe configuration problems, control logic defects, communication failures, and integration issues across PLC, DCS, SCADA, and batch management systems.
  • Develop high-quality, error-free industrial automation software and configuration in keeping with project requirements, client standards, and good engineering practices.
  • Communicate effectively with other engineering disciplines to coordinate designs, resolve interface requirements, and deliver integrated automation solutions.
  • Serve as a trusted technical resource for clients. Identify new project opportunities, support proposal efforts, and help define practical solutions that improve plant reliability, consistency, and performance.
  • Provide leadership, technical guidance, and mentoring to less experienced engineers and team members.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Computer, or Controls Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Minimum six years of controls, automation, electrical troubleshooting, and start-up experience. Senior-level batch automation experience is required.
  • Hands-on experience with batch control concepts, recipe management, procedural control, equipment phases, unit operations, and ISA-88 terminology and design principles.
  • Experience with one or more batch or process automation platforms such as Rockwell FactoryTalk Batch, PlantPAx, Siemens SIMATIC BATCH, AVEVA/Wonderware, or comparable systems.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and/or other PLC/DCS platforms used in process manufacturing environments.
  • Experience developing or supporting HMI/SCADA systems such as FactoryTalk View, AVEVA/Wonderware, Ignition, Siemens WinCC, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols and integration technologies including Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/IP, OPC DA/UA, and related plant-floor connectivity methods.
  • Knowledge of process control network architecture design, control system cybersecurity considerations, and integration with historians, databases, MES, or reporting systems is a plus.
  • Systems Integrator experience is a plus.
  • EPC project experience preferred.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE), Professional Engineering (PE), ISA CAP, or vendor-specific automation certifications are preferred but not required.
  • Varied industrial background is a plus. Key industries include food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, and manufacturing.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15-25%, both locally and overnight.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Able to access required client work sites.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; stoop, kneel, crouch; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk, and hear.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds or more.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • This employee may perform industrial field work which could include exposure to hazardous locations, inclement weather, moving mechanical parts, noise, ladders, uneven ground, and stairs.
  • This employee may perform industrial field work which could include exposure to a wide range of known food allergens.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • FactoryTalk Batch system configuration, recipe model development, phase logic integration, batch reporting, and troubleshooting.
  • ISA-88 model development including process cells, units, equipment modules, control modules, procedural elements, recipe structures, and phase ownership boundaries.
  • Commissioning or supporting validated, regulated, or quality-sensitive manufacturing environments.
  • Historian, MES, SQL database, reporting, and electronic batch record integration experience.
  • Ability to lead client workshops, perform technical discovery, document requirements, and convert operational needs into practical batch automation designs.

We offer market-competitive compensation for an OT Engineer - Manufacturing Systems Infrastructure with a base range of $93,000 to $117,000 annually, that includes profit sharing, ESOP participation, 401(k) matching, and overtime pay. Salaries are based on experience, skills, and qualifications.
