Senior Audio Software Engineer information

What does a senior audio software engineer do?

A Senior Audio Software Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes software systems for processing, recording, and generating audio. They work on complex audio algorithms, integrate audio solutions into products, and often collaborate with cross-functional teams like hardware, product, and QA engineers. Their responsibilities may include improving audio quality, reducing latency, and ensuring system stability in various environments. With their expertise, they also mentor junior engineers and contribute to architectural decisions for audio software projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior audio software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Audio Software Engineer, you need expertise in digital signal processing (DSP), strong coding skills (C++, Python, or similar), and a relevant degree in computer science or audio engineering. Familiarity with audio frameworks (like JUCE, VST, or Core Audio), version control systems, and experience with DAWs or plugin development are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help in collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and delivering complex audio solutions. These skills are vital to designing robust audio software, ensuring seamless integration, and driving innovation in audio technology products.

What are some common challenges faced by senior audio software engineers when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

Senior Audio Software Engineers often collaborate with product managers, sound designers, and other engineers, which can present challenges in aligning technical solutions with creative goals. Balancing real-time audio processing requirements with hardware limitations and user experience expectations requires effective communication and compromise. Additionally, translating non-technical feedback from creative teams into actionable engineering tasks can be complex, making adaptability and clear documentation key to successful collaboration.

What is the difference between Senior Audio Software Engineer vs Audio Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Audio Software EngineerAudio Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related; experience in audio DSP and software developmentBachelor's degree in relevant field; foundational knowledge of audio programming
Work EnvironmentDevelops complex audio algorithms, collaborates on product design, often in R&D teamsSupports audio features, tests software, and implements basic audio functionalities
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, gaming, multimedia, consumer electronicsSimilar industries, often as entry to mid-level roles in audio-focused companies

The main difference lies in experience and responsibility. Senior Audio Software Engineers handle complex audio development and lead projects, while Audio Software Engineers focus on implementing and testing audio features. Both roles require a strong background in audio programming, but the senior position demands more expertise and leadership.

  • Integrate VIA’s Web3 components and privacy-preserving technologies to deliver cutting-edge features and innovative platform functionality.
  • Define, document, and drive adoption of end-to-end software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes, ensuring clarity and efficiency from initial concept through deployment and maintenance.
  • Spearhead the creation, development, and optimization of automation pipelines for continuous integration, testing, and deployment (CI/CD), ensuring efficient and reliable application releases.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive automated testing strategies, including unit and integration tests, to deliver high-quality, robust software.
  • Proactively monitor, troubleshoot, analyze, and optimize the performance of deployed applications, working to mitigate bottlenecks.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and provide technical leadership in privacy and security, guiding project delivery and ensuring VIA’s solutions meet the highest standards.
  • Clearly articulate complex software designs, architectural choices, and technical processes to diverse audiences, including technical peers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate effectively with various cross-functional teams to ensure alignment, solve problems, and achieve successful project outcomes.
  • Rapidly grasp new technical concepts and effectively apply this knowledge to address complex challenges and develop innovative solutions that meet customer needs.
  • Continuously explore and thoughtfully integrate relevant advancements in privacy, cryptography, and distributed systems to contribute to VIA's cutting-edge products.
What you will bring to this role:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or science
  • 5+ years of relevant full stack or backend development experience
  • Strong experience with cloud-based software development in a microservices environment and cryptography techniques, including:
  • Developing RESTful APIs (using frameworks such as FastAPI) secured by OAuth2/Auth
  • Integrating asymmetric and/or symmetric encryption in applications
  • Thorough working knowledge of data structures, algorithms, databases (SQL and NoSQL), and in-memory data storage
  • Extensive knowledge of parallel processing, message brokers, and/or distributed task queues
  • Working knowledge of Docker containers
  • Previous experience leading an Agile team of developers a plus:
  • Proven on-time delivery of multiple quality software projects
  • Ability to advocate for technical excellence, maintaining the highest standard of software engineering practices
  • Model an ability to identify blockers and use critical thinking to provide creative solutions
  • Proficiency in documentation and the desire to clearly communicate technical processes to both non-technical and technical audiences.
  • Exposure to the following a plus: IETF RFCs, blockchain systems, zero-knowledge proofs
  • Service mesh (Istio), zero trust architecture and observability
  • Working knowledge of Helm charts
