What is a senior attorney?

Senior Attorneys are experienced legal professionals who provide expert legal advice, represent clients in complex legal matters, and often supervise junior attorneys or legal teams. They typically specialize in one or more areas of law and are responsible for managing significant cases, drafting legal documents, and developing legal strategies. Senior Attorneys may also play a key role in mentoring less-experienced lawyers and ensuring the legal team's work meets high professional standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Attorney, you need deep legal expertise, strong analytical skills, and typically a Juris Doctor (JD) degree with a valid state bar license. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, case management software, and continued legal education certifications are often required. Excellent negotiation, leadership, and communication skills help you manage complex cases and mentor junior staff. These capabilities are crucial for delivering sound legal advice, achieving favorable outcomes, and supporting organizational goals in high-stakes environments.

How does a senior attorney typically collaborate with junior legal staff and other departments within a firm?

Senior Attorneys often play a pivotal role in mentoring junior legal staff, providing guidance on case strategy, and reviewing work to ensure quality and compliance. They also collaborate closely with other departments such as compliance, risk management, and business development to align legal advice with the organization's broader goals. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that legal solutions are practical, risk-aware, and support the firm's overall objectives.

What is the difference between Senior Attorney vs Associate Attorney?

Woods Aitken LLP is seeking an experienced Employment & Labor Law Attorney to join our growing and highly respected practice group. Portable book of business welcome, but not required. This role is an opportunity to step into meaningful, hands-on client work alongside a collaborative team that values clarity, responsiveness, and practical legal solutions.

We are seeking more than someone to fill an opening. We are looking for an attorney who wants to build a long-term career with Woods Aitken. We welcome interest from experienced associates as well as established lateral attorneys who are looking for a collaborative firm where they can make a meaningful impact and grow into future leadership opportunities. The position can be tailored to the experience, skills, and career goals of the successful candidate.

About the Role

You will work closely with a tight-knit employment and labor team that collaborates across all three of our offices and meets regularly to ensure consistency, quality, and strategic alignment in client service. This is not a siloed role, you will be part of a group that actively supports one another and shares knowledge.

Our clients span a wide range of industries, and we pride ourselves on delivering clear, actionable guidance that helps them make confident decisions in real time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise employers on a broad range of employment and labor law matters

  • Draft and review employment policies, agreements, and handbooks
  • Support or lead litigation matters, depending on experience
  • Partner with clients on day-to-day counseling and risk mitigation
  • Collaborate with attorneys across offices and practice areas

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed in Nebraska
  • 8+ years of experience in employment and labor law (employer-side preferred)
  • Strong writing, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to provide clear, concise, and practical legal advice
  • Sound judgment and confidence in decision-making
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to engage across teams
  • Professional demeanor, discretion, and strong commitment to client service
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities
  • Tech-comfortable and willing to learn new systems and processes including integration of AI
  • Reliable, highly responsive, resourceful, and team-oriented
  • Flexible and adaptable; enjoys fast paced work

We are a firm that genuinely works together. Our employment and labor group is highly collaborative, supportive, and aligned in how we serve clients.
  • Practical, Business-Focused Lawyering
We value attorneys who can cut through complexity and deliver clear, actionable guidance. Clients trust us to help them make decisions, not just analyze issues.
  • Work-Life Integration that Works
We are committed to sustainable practices, including reasonable billing expectations and flexibility that allows our attorneys to succeed professionally and personally.
  • Cross-Office Connectivity
With offices in Omaha, Lincoln, and Denver, we operate as one firm. This role offers the opportunity to work seamlessly across locations and build meaningful internal relationships.
  • Strong Staff
We are committed to positive and transparent leadership, open communication, respect for every team member’s input, and long term retention. We have a wonderful team of legal assistants, paralegals, and administrative staff who support our attorneys and clients.
  • Long-Term Opportunity
This is a chance to step into a meaningful role within a well-established practice group, with room to grow and make a lasting impact

In a recent Employee Engagement Survey, our team most often described our environment as:
Collegial • Supportive • Challenging • Integrity • Professional • Engaging • Flexible

And 100% of our attorneys and staff agreed:

“I trust our senior leaders to lead the organization to future success.”

“I am proud to work here.”

“The senior leaders of this organization demonstrate integrity.”

Benefits Summary

We are committed to supporting the well-being and success of our employees. Highlights include:

  • Health Coverage: PPO or HSA plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield, plus Dental, Vision, Critical Illness, Accident, and Hospital Indemnity options

  • Leave: Medical Leave of Absence eligibility after one year
  • Flexibility: Flex Time policy (up to 4 hours per week) to support work/life balance
  • Community: Paid Volunteer Time policy to encourage service and outreach

A Note on Fit

We are looking for more than technical skills. The right candidate is someone who is:

  • Clear and confident in their communication
  • Thoughtful and solutions-oriented
  • Invested in being part of a team, not just a practice
  • Motivated to build strong, lasting client relationships
