What is a Remote Attorney job?

A Remote Attorney is a licensed legal professional who provides legal services, advice, and representation while working outside a traditional office setting. They may work for law firms, corporations, government agencies, or as independent contractors. Remote Attorneys handle tasks such as legal research, drafting contracts, litigation support, and client consultations using digital communication tools. This role allows for flexibility in work location while maintaining the same ethical and professional responsibilities as in-office attorneys.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Attorney position, and why are they important?

A Remote Attorney must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar membership, strong legal research skills, and proficiency in drafting and analyzing legal documents. Familiarity with legal practice management software, secure document sharing platforms, and e-filing systems is often essential. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear virtual communication skills help remote attorneys excel when collaborating with clients and legal teams remotely. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality legal services efficiently and maintaining compliance while working in a remote environment.

What challenges might I encounter working as a Remote Attorney, and how can I address them?

One common challenge for Remote Attorneys is maintaining effective communication and collaboration with clients and colleagues without face-to-face meetings. To overcome this, it’s important to master video conferencing tools, maintain regular check-ins, and have clear protocols for document sharing and feedback. Staying organized and self-disciplined is key to managing caseloads and meeting deadlines from a home office. With intentional strategies and digital tools, remote attorneys can remain highly productive and deliver excellent service despite physical distance.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Legal Aid of Nebraska is seeking an experienced attorney to join our ElderAccessLine team in a flexible role serving Nebraskans statewide.
This position is ideal for a tenured attorney looking for meaningful work without the demands of litigation, courtroom appearances, or high-conflict practice areas. It is also an excellent opportunity for attorneys returning to the workforce after a career pause or resume gap who are ready to re-engage in legal practice in a supportive environment.
You'll provide legal guidance, mentorship, and strategic oversight while helping ensure older adults across Nebraska have access to high-quality legal services.
Why This Role Stands Out
• No litigation or courtroom work
• Flexible, mostly remote work environment
• Opportunity to work statewide from anywhere within Nebraska near a Legal Aid office
• Mission-driven work supporting vulnerable older adults
• Collaborative and supportive legal team
• Strong fit for experienced attorneys seeking flexibility or re-entry into practice
• Opportunity to mentor and supervise attorneys, paralegals, and legal support staff
Position Summary
The Supervising ElderAccessLine Attorney plays a key leadership role within the Centralized Intake Unit (CIU), providing legal guidance, supervision, and strategic direction to attorneys and paralegals serving older Nebraskans.
This role combines legal analysis, client guidance, staff mentorship, intake oversight, and community engagement. The attorney will help ensure clients receive high-quality legal information and services while supporting efficient statewide intake operations.
Essential Responsibilities
• Evaluate Centralized Intake Unit applications to determine eligibility and level of service
• Conduct legal research, client interviews, and fact gathering to provide legal advice and recommendations
• Educate clients regarding legal options, processes, and potential outcomes
• Assist in supervising, training, and mentoring intake paralegals and support staff
• Help manage daily workflow and intake operations
• Ensure compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations and recordkeeping requirements
• Maintain current knowledge of legal issues affecting elders and low-income communities
• Support outreach and education efforts within the elder community statewide
• Build and maintain relationships with partner agencies and community organizations
• Assist in developing intake guidance materials, scripts, and documentation
• Participate in AccessLine and ElderAccessLine call support as needed
Work Environment & Flexibility
This is a mostly remote position with flexible work arrangements. Attorneys may work from anywhere in Nebraska within 60 miles of a Legal Aid of Nebraska office.
Occasional travel to Legal Aid offices, including Omaha, and limited statewide travel will be required.
Candidates must be able to maintain a private, confidential workspace for remote work.
Requirements
Qualifications
We welcome applicants from a variety of legal backgrounds, particularly experienced attorneys seeking a flexible and rewarding next chapter in their careers.
Required Qualifications
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
• Licensed and in good standing with the Nebraska State Bar, or admission imminent
• Experience practicing law, preferably in elder law, legal aid, public interest, poverty law, or related client-service work
• Strong communication and leadership skills
• Ability to work collaboratively within a statewide team environment
• Commitment to serving low-income and older adult communities
Preferred Qualifications
• Prior supervisory or mentoring experience
• Awareness of legal issues affecting low-income and elder populations
• Experience working with vulnerable or underserved communities
• Attorneys returning to practice after a career break are encouraged to apply
About the Opportunity
This role offers the chance to continue practicing law in a meaningful way while maintaining greater work-life flexibility than many traditional legal positions. Attorneys with substantial practice experience who are looking to step away from litigation, reduce burnout, or return to the profession in a supportive environment are strongly encouraged to apply.
Benefits
At Legal Aid of Nebraska, we value our employees and are committed to supporting their health, well-being, and professional growth. Eligible full-time employees regularly scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week may enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including:
