What is the difference between Self Employed Rn vs Staff Nurse?

Employer & Industry UsageSelf-employed, contracts with multiple clients or agenciesHospitals, clinics, healthcare facilities

Self Employed Rns operate independently, managing their own schedules and clients, while Staff Nurses are employed by healthcare facilities with fixed shifts. Both roles require RN licensure, but their work environments and employment structures differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a self employed RN?

To succeed as a Self Employed RN, you need a valid RN license, clinical expertise, and strong knowledge of healthcare regulations and best practices. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, billing software, and potentially telehealth platforms is important for managing independent practice. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and business management skills help distinguish outstanding self-employed nurses. These competencies are crucial to provide quality patient care, maintain regulatory compliance, and effectively manage the business aspects of independent nursing practice.

What is a self employed RN?

Self-employed Registered Nurses (RNs) are licensed nursing professionals who work independently, rather than being directly employed by hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare facilities. They may offer services such as home health care, consulting, case management, or wellness education. Self-employed RNs set their own schedules, negotiate contracts, and are responsible for managing their own business operations, including billing and compliance. This career path offers flexibility and autonomy, but also requires strong organizational and business skills.

What are some common challenges faced by self employed RNs, and how can they be managed?

Self-employed RNs often encounter challenges such as managing inconsistent client workloads, handling administrative tasks like billing and scheduling, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations independently. To manage these challenges, many self-employed RNs use specialized software for scheduling and invoicing, stay updated on licensure and insurance requirements, and build strong professional networks for referrals. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with clients and setting boundaries can help create a more sustainable work-life balance.

Skilled Nursing Registered Nurse (RN)Role Summary

Experience the rewards of long-term care in a dedicated 40-bed skilled nursing facility. As a Skilled Nursing RN, you will provide compassionate, high-quality care to residents during the critical overnight shift. You will be responsible for the full nursing process—assessing, planning, and implementing individualized care plans while ensuring that residents maintain their dignity, independence, and comfort. This role is ideal for a clinician who excels at building long-term relationships with residents and their families while maintaining the rigorous clinical standards required for IV therapy and advanced wound care.

Key Duties:

  • Comprehensive Care Management: Assess, plan, and coordinate individualized care for residents, making real-time adjustments to care plans as clinical needs evolve.

  • Clinical Excellence: Administer medications and complex treatments, including IV medications and professional dressing changes, with a deep understanding of therapeutic effects and potential side effects.

  • Resident Advocacy: Maintain residents' self-esteem, privacy, and confidentiality while providing opportunities for independence and personal choice.

  • Physician Collaboration: Ensure all physician orders are processed accurately and notifications are handled in a timely manner to maintain continuity of care.

  • Safety & Mobility: Expertly utilize transfer equipment (gait belts, mechanical lifts, slide boards) and handling techniques to ensure residents feel safe and secure during movement.

  • Documentation & Technology: Maintain accurate and timely records using the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Demonstrate and apply knowledge of department-specific safety, fire, and disaster plans to protect the resident population.

  • Leadership: Direct and document care provided by support staff, ensuring all call lights are responded to promptly and education is provided to residents and their families.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

  • Licensure: Current RN licensure for the state of practice.

  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Clinical Skills: Must have the ability to perform IV medication administration and complex dressing changes.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 months in a Long-Term Care (LTC) setting.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 35 lbs and safely operate mechanical lift equipment.

Desired Qualifications
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills in English to effectively exchange information with residents and interdisciplinary staff.

  • Clinical Judgment: Advanced knowledge of geriatric nursing skills and the ability to detect subtle changes in resident conditions.

  • Compassion: A proven track record of providing care in a patient, safe, and efficient manner that prioritizes resident dignity.

Location and Work Type
  • Setting: 40-Bed Long-Term Care / Skilled Nursing Facility

  • Work Type: Direct Hire Only

  • Schedule: Full-Time Day or Night shift-12 hour shifts

  • Incentives: Potential Sign-On and Relocation Bonuses
