As of Sep 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for self employed life insurance in Arizona is $82,908.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $53,600.00 and $113,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does it mean to be a self-employed life insurance agent?

A self-employed life insurance agent is an independent professional who sells life insurance policies to individuals and businesses, rather than working directly for a single insurance company. These agents often represent multiple insurers, allowing them to offer clients a wider range of policy options. They are responsible for finding their own clients, managing their business operations, and complying with licensing and regulatory requirements. Self-employed agents typically earn commissions based on the policies they sell instead of receiving a fixed salary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a self-employed life insurance agent?

To thrive as a self-employed life insurance agent, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, sales strategies, and must hold the appropriate state insurance license. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, digital marketing tools, and insurance quoting systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and resilience help agents build client trust and manage the challenges of self-employment. These abilities are crucial for growing a client base, ensuring regulatory compliance, and achieving sustained business success in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced by self-employed life insurance agents, and how can they be overcome?

Self-employed life insurance agents often face challenges such as building a client base from scratch, managing inconsistent income, and staying motivated without direct supervision. Success in this role typically relies on strong networking, persistent prospecting, and effective time management. Many agents find it helpful to join professional associations, leverage online marketing tools, and seek mentorship from experienced peers to grow their business and overcome these hurdles.

What is the difference between Self Employed Life Insurance vs Independent Insurance Agent?

Independent Insurance Agents also sell life insurance but usually represent multiple companies, providing clients with a range of options. Both roles require licensing and operate independently, but their business models and client interactions differ slightly.

Can you be a self-employed life insurance agent?

Yes, a self-employed life insurance agent operates independently, often working as an independent contractor rather than for a specific company. They typically need to obtain the necessary licenses, such as a life insurance license, and may set their own schedules and client base. Success in this role depends on sales skills, industry knowledge, and the ability to build a network.

How much do self-employed life insurance agents make?

Self-employed life insurance agents typically earn between $50,000 and $150,000 annually, with income largely dependent on sales performance, commissions, and client base. Successful agents often have strong sales skills, industry certifications, and work flexible schedules to maximize earnings.

Job description

Company Description Self-employed roofing sales professionals in Tucson, AZ typically operate as independent contractors or small business owners, providing tailored roof replacement and repair solutions to residential and commercial clients. Working directly with property owners, they focus on building trust, explaining options clearly, and delivering high-quality service from initial inspection through project completion. This environment offers significant autonomy, performance-based earning potential, and the opportunity to grow a personal client base. The work often involves collaboration with local roofing crews, suppliers, and insurance representatives to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.

Role Description This is a full-time hybrid Roofing Sales role based in Tucson, AZ, with a mix of field work and some work-from-home tasks. Day-to-day responsibilities include prospecting and following up on leads, meeting with property owners, performing roof inspections, and presenting repair or replacement options and estimates. The role involves preparing proposals, explaining contracts, coordinating with roofing crews and suppliers, and tracking projects from sale to completion. Administrative duties such as updating CRM or tracking systems, handling email and phone communication, and managing documentation can be done remotely. Success in this role requires consistent local travel, professional in-person interactions, and disciplined scheduling and follow-through.

Qualifications

  • Ability to build rapport with homeowners and business owners, communicate clearly, and present roofing solutions in a professional, easy-to-understand manner.
  • Experience or strong interest in outside sales, including canvassing neighborhoods, door-to-door outreach, and responding promptly to inbound inquiries.
  • Basic understanding of roofing materials, installation methods, and common roof issues, or willingness to learn technical product knowledge quickly.
  • Comfort with climbing ladders, conducting rooftop inspections, taking photos, and documenting findings safely and accurately.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including scheduling appointments, tracking leads, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Proficiency with smartphones, email, and basic office software; experience with CRM or lead-tracking tools is beneficial.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and ability to travel throughout the Tucson, AZ area regularly.
  • Self-motivated, goal-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently and manage a flexible hybrid schedule.
  • Prior experience in roofing, construction, home improvement, or insurance-related work is a plus but not required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certifications in sales or construction trades are advantageous.
