Seismic Engineer information

What is a seismic engineer?

Seismic engineers are professionals who specialize in designing and analyzing structures to withstand the effects of earthquakes and other seismic activities. They use principles of civil and structural engineering, combined with knowledge of geology and seismology, to ensure buildings, bridges, and infrastructure are safe and resilient. Their work includes assessing seismic risks, developing earthquake-resistant designs, and implementing safety standards to protect lives and property. Seismic engineers often work closely with architects, construction teams, and government agencies to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.

What is the difference between Seismic Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectSeismic EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, seismic design certificationsEngineering degree, structural design certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on earthquake-resistant design, analysis of seismic risksDesign and analyze various structural systems for buildings and infrastructure
Industry UsageSpecialized in seismic safety, earthquake engineeringBroadly involved in all structural projects

Seismic Engineers specialize in earthquake-resistant design and seismic risk assessment, focusing on structures' safety during earthquakes. Structural Engineers have a broader role, designing various structural elements for buildings and infrastructure. While both roles require engineering credentials, Seismic Engineers focus more on seismic certifications and earthquake-specific analysis, making them a specialized subset within the structural engineering field.

What are some common challenges seismic engineers face when working on projects in high-risk earthquake zones?

Seismic Engineers working in high-risk earthquake zones often encounter challenges such as balancing strict safety regulations with project budgets, dealing with geological uncertainties, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure structural integrity. They must stay updated on the latest seismic codes and incorporate advanced technologies to mitigate risks. Effective communication with architects, contractors, and local authorities is crucial to address site-specific constraints and deliver resilient designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seismic engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seismic Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, with specialized knowledge in earthquake engineering and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, and seismic design codes, as well as professional engineering certification (such as PE or SE), is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and interpreting complex data. These competencies are crucial for designing structures that can withstand seismic events and ensuring public safety.

Job description

What We're Looking For

Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer - Technical Manager to join our Federal Services team in the Salt Lake City, UT area.  This is a key leadership opportunity for an experienced structural professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality design solutions while building and mentoring high-performing teams.

In this role, you will lead a team of structural engineers, EITs, and designers, providing technical expertise and oversight across a diverse portfolio of building projects. You'll partner closely with the National Structural Engineering Lead and other discipline managers to balance workloads, drive project performance, and ensure consistency in design excellence across the team.

You will serve as a trusted technical leader-overseeing complex projects, performing quality control reviews, and acting as Engineer of Record when required. Additional responsibilities include developing scopes of work, preparing fee proposals, and supporting targeted business development efforts.

At Michael Baker, we pride ourselves on a culture of collaboration, innovation, and mentorship. You'll join a team that values knowledge sharing, invests in professional growth, and empowers individuals to make a meaningful impact on projects and the communities we serve. We are seeking someone who not only brings strong technical expertise, but also embodies our commitment to teamwork, client service, and continuous improvement.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the preparation and review of complex structural design deliverables, including studies, calculations, reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) as required; perform design checks, internal technical reviews (ITRs), and quality control of team deliverables.
  • Provide clear direction, redlines, and technical guidance to EITs and BIM designers.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including defining scope, developing man-hour estimates, and ensuring adherence to MBI standards and protocols.
  • Support construction activities by reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and addressing field issues and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and project teams, participating in meetings, tracking action items, and ensuring effective communication.
  • Engage with clients to support project delivery and contribute to business development efforts; build strong client relationships to ensure satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Conduct periodic site visits to document findings and support project oversight.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provide mentorship, technical oversight, and performance feedback to less experienced staff.
  • Plan, assign, and monitor work to ensure quality standards, deadlines, and project requirements are consistently met.
  • Support staff development, utilization, and succession planning in partnership with leadership and Human Resources.
  • Contribute to department operations, including budgeting, resource planning, and business development initiatives.
  • Stay current with industry trends and participate in internal and external professional development activities.

What You Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural, Architectural, or Civil Engineering.
  • 12+ years of relevant experience (a master's degree may substitute for 1-2 years of experience).
  • Minimum of 5 years licensure as Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Pennsylvania. Ability to gain licensure as a Structural Engineer (SE) in states that recognize such is preferred.
  • Proficiency with RAM SS, RISA 3D, ETABS, Revit, Enercalc, Microsoft Excel, and MS Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of structural design codes, including IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, AISC, TMS, and ACI.
  • Experience with the Whole Building Design Guide and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) for Department of Defense projects is preferred.
  • Experience with seismic design for new construction and seismic evaluation of existing buildings.
  • Strong verbal, written, and technical communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across teams and interface with clients.
  • Available for periodic travel.

Compensation

The approximate compensation range for this position is $101,502 to $159,880 per year.  This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.  Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
