What is seeding in agriculture?

Seeding in agriculture refers to the process of planting seeds in the soil to grow crops or plants. This can be done manually or with the help of machines, depending on the scale and type of farming. The seeding process is crucial as it determines plant spacing, depth, and ultimately affects crop yield and health. Proper seeding ensures that seeds have the best chance to germinate and develop into healthy plants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seeding technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seeding Technician, you need knowledge of horticulture or agronomy, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or relevant field experience. Familiarity with seeders, irrigation systems, soil analysis tools, and sometimes certifications in pesticide application are commonly required. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team help individuals excel in this position. These skills ensure efficient and successful crop establishment, leading to higher yields and overall agricultural productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in seeding roles within agriculture, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in seeding roles often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, seed quality variability, and equipment malfunctions. Effective planning and close monitoring of weather forecasts can help mitigate environmental risks, while sourcing certified seeds and performing regular equipment maintenance ensures optimal results. Collaboration with agronomists and farm managers is also key to addressing issues quickly and maintaining high crop yields.

Job description

ALPHA Landscapes — Erosion Control Crew Foreman/Operator (Johnston, IA)

ALPHA Landscapes is seeking an experienced Erosion Control Foreman/Operator to be a part of our seeding and erosion control division completing projects across central Iowa.

ALPHA Landscapes is a 100% new-construction focused landscape and erosion control company working with the top general contractors and developers in the area. We pride ourselves on creating an environment where our employees look forward to coming to work every day, and being part of a TEAM that sets them up for success, all while working on the top construction projects in central Iowa.

ALPHA Landscapes started with a pickup truck and a wheelbarrow in 2018 and has now grown into the largest commercial landscape construction firm in Iowa with top of the line trucks and equipment, and 50+ employees operating out of our Johnston office.

This role is different from our other foreman positions in one important way: you will typically be running jobs solo or with one helper. You are the crew. That means we need someone who can load out, get to the site, execute the work correctly the first time, and document it — without daily hand-holding. It's a high-autonomy, high-trust position.

This is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing, yet stable company, with typical hours between 40-60 weekly, March-December (Hours may be available in offseason depending on your skillset), pay starting at $20-26/hr, with earning potential upwards of $30+/hr.

What does a typical day look like?

  • Loading materials and equipment at the shop every morning
  • Traveling to the jobsite and sometimes between multiple active sites in a day
  • Seeding: calibrating and setting seed and fertilizer rates to spec, permanent and temporary mixes
  • Straw mulching and crimping, erosion control blanket
  • Silt fence installation
  • Equipment operation — skid loader, tractor, seeder, straw blower, silt fence installer, trailering between sites
  • Communicating with ALPHA project and field operations managers

Required; you must have verifiable experience with:

  • Seeding, including knowing how to set and calibrate seed and fertilizer rates
  • Tractor and skid loader operation
  • Silt fence installation
  • Straw mulching
  • General erosion control BMP installation and maintenance

This experience can come from an erosion control contractor or from an agricultural background. If you've been running a drill, a broadcast spreader, and a bale processor on a farm, we want to talk to you.

Also required at minimum:

  • 3+ years erosion control, construction, or ag experience
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record; comfortable towing equipment trailers
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own day
  • Time management skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Prior experience working independently or being in charge of a crew.

Preferred:

  • CDL (We provide free CDL training for those without one)
  • Familiarity with SWPPP requirements and construction site inspection documentation
  • Ability to read plans and civil/grading drawings

Benefits include!

  • Competitive industry pay
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Retirement plans with 3% company match
  • 100% company funded life insurance
  • Health insurance options

All new hire candidates will be required to take a drug test upon arrival their first day at ALPHA Landscapes. In the event the candidate tests positive, the candidate will not be able to start until they provide a negative test. ALPHA Landscapes holds the right to withdraw the offer at any time unless a negative test is provided. Candidates who refuse to submit to a drug test will no longer be considered for employment, and any offer of employment will be rescinded.
