What is a security system engineer?

Security System Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and maintain security systems to protect buildings, assets, and information from unauthorized access or harm. They work with technologies such as surveillance cameras, alarm systems, access control, and cybersecurity measures. Their responsibilities include assessing security risks, selecting appropriate technologies, configuring system components, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that all security systems comply with relevant laws and standards. Security System Engineers often collaborate with IT teams, facility managers, and law enforcement to provide comprehensive protection solutions.

What are some common challenges security system engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing infrastructures?

Security System Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new and legacy hardware, maintaining system uptime during upgrades, and addressing potential security vulnerabilities introduced by new components. Additionally, they must coordinate with IT, facilities, and management teams to minimize disruptions and adhere to compliance standards. Proactive planning, thorough testing, and clear communication are essential to successfully integrating advanced security solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a security system engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security System Engineer, you need a strong background in network security, systems architecture, and information technology, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and certifications like CISSP or CompTIA Security+ are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure robust protection of organizational assets, effective risk mitigation, and clear collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Security Systems Project Manager to be embedded on our client's Security Technology team.

This role combines corporate security systems design and deployment project management with hands-on technical programming responsibilities. The ideal candidate will lead the deployment of enterprise security technologies while supporting system programming, configuration, testing, and commissioning activities. Experience with Lenel OnGuard is required.

The Security Systems Project Manager will oversee security technology projects including access control, video management systems, intercoms, alarms, and other integrated security solutions across new builds, renovations, and system upgrades. This individual will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, vendors, and security integrators to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with security standards.

This is a full-time, fully onsite role based in San Jose, CA. Travel to project sites will be required approximately 25% of the time.

Essential Job Functions
  • Lead all phases of security-systems projects including design, bid management, installation oversight, and final testing and commissioning for new builds and MACs.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot new and existing security devices within the client's Lenel access control environment.
  • Develop detailed project plans defining scope, schedule, deliverables, resources, budget, and risk management strategies.
  • Design and review security system layouts (CCTV, access control, intrusion, intercom, etc.) in accordance with company standards and project requirements.
  • Evaluate vendor bids, manage the selection process, and oversee contractors through installation to ensure quality, compliance, and documentation accuracy.
  • Coordinate and lead meetings with cross-functional stakeholders (Workplace, Program Delivery, IT/Network, Security Operations, GC, and integrators) to align project scope, schedule, and execution.
  • Oversee system testing, commissioning, and handover activities to ensure full functionality, proper documentation, and client sign-off.
  • Track project performance, issues, and financials - including cost and schedule variances - and apply structured change-management processes as needed.
  • Maintain all project documentation and ensure client satisfaction, safety, and quality throughout the project lifecycle.

Required Skills and Experience
  • 5+ years of project management experience leading enterprise-wide security-systems deployments (new builds and/or large MAC/upgrades) and construction/physical infrastructure projects.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience programming, configuring, and supporting enterprise physical security systems.
  • Experience with Lenel OnGuard programming, configuration, and system administration.
  • Experience managing vendors, contractors, and security system integrators.
  • Excellent project management skills with proficiency managing numerous concurrent project deliverables with little supervision.
  • Strong communicator and collaborator: able to influence cross-functional teams, engage at technical and executive levels, and drive consensus.
$120,000 - $160,000 a year
