Position Summary

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Police, the Lieutenant serves as third-in-command of the Sacramento State Police Department. The Lieutenant is responsible for leading, directing, and managing 24/7 sworn patrol, investigation operations, and Dispatch. They facilitate frequent and effective communication within Operations areas and direct proactive patrol, community policing, emergency response, special event planning, investigations, property and evidence management, police fleet management, and community service programs. The Lieutenant oversees recruitment, selection, promotion, scheduling, training, readiness, and performance for these positions and areas, shaping related policies and procedures. Additional duties include serving as liaison to allied law enforcement agencies, acting as Incident Commander and Watch Commander, and assuming Deputy or Chief responsibilities when required.

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from an accredited university/college. Possession of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the degree on a year‑for‑year basis.
Experience and Licenses
  • Minimum of ten (10) years employment as a paid California peace officer.
  • Possession of California P.O.S.T. academy, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Supervisory certificates.
  • Current or previous employment as a Sergeant or higher with at least three (3) years of service at the rank of Sergeant.
  • Completion of a P.O.S.T. certified management course within one (1) year of appointment and serving as a lieutenant for a period of two (2) years.
  • Meet all minimum standards set forth in California Government Code, Section 1031 and other requirements for peace officers.
  • Valid California Class “C” Driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Increasing responsibility in law enforcement operations, training, personnel supervision, and operational planning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement methods, procedures, criminal codes, and investigative techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of campus activity regulations and the ability to learn quickly.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and laws accurately.
  • Ability to work independently, make sound judgments, and lead shift members effectively.
  • Capability to supervise, guide, and positively influence employees.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with a diverse population.
  • Handle all duties with acumen, accuracy, timeliness, confidentiality, and foster collaboration and trust.
  • Resolve problems and conflicts efficiently.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize work to meet deadlines while handling concurrent tasks.
  • Write detailed reports and correspondence with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills using the Windows platform, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Commitment to a welcoming and inclusive work environment for all colleagues and constituents.
