What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Security Compliance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security Compliance Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of information security frameworks (such as ISO 27001, NIST, SOC 2), risk assessment methodologies, and a relevant bachelor’s degree or certification (e.g., CISSP, CISA). Familiarity with GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) tools, vulnerability management systems, and audit management platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in interpreting regulations and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure organizations remain compliant with industry regulations, minimize security risks, and maintain customer trust.

What are some common challenges Security Compliance Engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Security Compliance Engineers often collaborate with IT, development, and business teams to ensure that security policies and compliance requirements are integrated into daily operations. At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging - but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.
What you'll do
Help transform how SAP Concur manages security compliance and FedRAMP operations through automation, analytics, and continuous controls monitoring.
This role combines security compliance, controls engineering, and automation to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of our federal security program. You will identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, automate evidence collection and reporting, enhance visibility into control effectiveness, and build solutions that strengthen audit readiness and support continuous ATO sustainment.
Working closely with Security, Compliance, Engineering, Operations, and Product teams, you will help design and implement scalable processes, dashboards, workflows, and automation capabilities that improve how security controls are measured, monitored, and maintained. You will also help evaluate emerging technologies, including AI-enabled solutions, to drive operational efficiency and program maturity across our FedRAMP environment.
The Role:
  • Lead initiatives to enhance Continuous Controls Monitoring (CCM) and Continuous Controls Testing (CCT) capabilities.
  • Evaluate the security control landscape and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, visibility, and risk reduction through automation.
  • Design and develop automated workflows, dashboards, and reporting solutions that provide ongoing insight into control effectiveness and compliance posture.
  • Build and maintain scripts, integrations, and data pipelines that support evidence collection, controls testing, monitoring, and compliance analytics.
  • Leverage AI-enabled tools and automation technologies to improve compliance operations, reporting, documentation, and control assessment activities.
  • Participate in security control testing cycles, including evidence collection, control validation, gap identification, and remediation tracking.
  • Support FedRAMP continuous monitoring activities, audit readiness efforts, and ongoing ATO sustainment.
  • Develop metrics, dashboards, and reporting capabilities for leadership and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Cloud Operations, Security Operations, and Compliance teams to implement scalable security and compliance solutions.
  • Conduct risk assessments, identify control deficiencies, and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain process documentation, operational procedures, and technical artifacts supporting security and compliance programs.
  • Monitor emerging regulatory requirements, compliance frameworks, automation technologies, and AI capabilities relevant to security operations and governance.

What you bring
Required:
  • 5-8 years of experience in cybersecurity, security compliance, controls engineering, automation engineering, governance, risk, and compliance (GRC), or a related field.
  • Experience supporting FedRAMP, FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, NIST CSF, or similar regulatory frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience developing automation solutions using Python, PowerShell, SQL, APIs, workflow orchestration tools, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience designing dashboards, analytics, reporting solutions, or data pipelines supporting security and compliance programs.
  • Experience participating in control testing, continuous monitoring, audit readiness, risk assessments, or compliance operations.
  • Strong strategic thinking and documentation skills; able to translate controls and compliance requirements out of compliance-speak and into clear functional requirements for varying technical audiences.
  • Fluency in English and proven ability to operate effectively in a government-facing, compliance-driven environment.

Preferred:
  • Experience supporting FedRAMP authorization, continuous monitoring, or ATO sustainment activities.
  • Experience with GRC platforms, compliance tooling, ticketing systems, or data analytics platforms.
  • Experience leveraging AI-enabled development, analytics, automation, or workflow tools to improve operational efficiency.
  • Experience implementing continuous controls monitoring (CCM) or continuous controls testing (CCT) programs.
