Job description

The Walker Art Center empowers people to experience the transformative possibilities of the art and ideas of our time and to imagine the world in new ways. In our over 125-year history, we have become one of the most celebrated art museums in the country and we are known for our innovative presentations and acclaimed collections of contemporary art across the spectrum of the visual, performing, and media arts.
This role works within a team of security professionals who help to provide a safe and secure environment for the museum's collections, properties, facilities, visitors, and staff while delivering superior customer service.
WHAT YOU GET TO DO
  • Continuously monitors the galleries and museum to ensure the security & safety of our collection/Walker assets.
    • Communicate with the maintenance staff as needed to ensure a safe environment.
    • Keep in close contact with Registrars and Curators to ensure the safety and security of the galleries and art.
  • Takes proactive steps to protect the collection and WAC assets.
  • Closely monitors visitor/staff activity/behavior and promptly reports and documents suspicious behavior to the Security Manager.
  • Establishes a clear understanding of the security requirements/needs of each exhibition.
  • Reports art damage to the Registration Department and documents appropriately.
  • Is familiar with, and successfully operates, all WAC security systems. (camera system, access control, fire and burglar systems, etc.).
  • Monitors safety conditions within the museum.
  • Monitors the physical condition of the museum and communicates concerns as directed.
  • Be familiar with all emergency procedures.
  • Takes charge in emergency or crisis situations. (must be ready for medical emergencies, bomb threats, fire, power failures, etc.)
  • Work in the Control Center when assigned.
  • Communicates concerns and issues with first and second security department shifts.
  • Conducts key and proxy card audits and provides results.
  • Conducts rounds of the facilities to ensure the property is safe and secure.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

WHAT WE NEED IN YOU
Minimum Requirements
  • 2+ years' related experience required.
  • Professional demeanor and a strong customer service orientation are essential.
  • Strong communication skills as well as the ability to work with diverse visitors/groups
  • Excellent time management and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to present a professional and courteous appearance to visitors and staff; exercise tact and diplomacy at all times and remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility, initiative, strong work ethic, and the highest level of integrity and professionalism
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cohesively with other Operations leadership and staff.
  • Knowledge of computers, MS Office Suite (Word, Excel), preferred.
  • Willing to become and maintain TSA certification
  • CPR / First Aid Certified, or willing to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid Certification

Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the Walker campus, including galleries, offices, loading dock areas, and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
  • Must be able to remain stationary for extended periods while monitoring security systems, surveillance cameras, alarms, and access control systems in the Control Center.
  • Frequently required to patrol indoor and outdoor areas, including walking long distances and navigating stairs, ramps, and uneven outdoor surfaces in varying weather conditions.
  • Requires the ability to hear and respond to alarms, radio communications, telephones, and visitor or staff inquiries.
  • Frequently required to communicate verbally and in writing, including preparing incident reports and responding to emergency situations.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds, including security equipment, packages, supplies, or barriers.
  • May be required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb stairs during patrols, inspections, or emergency response activities.
  • Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and other seasonal weather conditions.
  • Required weekends, holidays, special events, and extended shifts as operational needs dictate.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
This position is considered full-time, non-exempt. As a non-exempt position, it is eligible for overtime pay. The minimum compensation for this role is $21.00 / hour (with shift differential). The Walker offers a wide range of benefits for both part-time and full-time employees.
This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.
