Seasonal Trail Maintenance Jobs (NOW HIRING)

North Dakota Parks and Recreation is seeking two dependable seasonal trail maintenance workers to help maintain motorized and non-motorized trail systems in northeast North Dakota and other assigned trail locations.
This is a hands-on outdoor position for someone who enjoys actively working in nature, takes pride in maintaining public trails, and can work safely with limited on-site supervision. This position may be a good fit for someone with practical experience in groundskeeping, farming, ranching, construction, equipment operation, road maintenance, park maintenance, or similar hands-on work who is looking for meaningful seasonal work with a flexible, project-based schedule.
Duties and Tasks
Seasonal trail maintenance workers may perform the following duties based on project needs, training, experience, trail conditions, supervisor authorization, and legal eligibility:
• Perform seasonal maintenance on motorized and non-motorized trail systems.
• Mow, trim, clear brush, remove debris, and maintain trail corridors.
• Assist with trail surface repair, grading, resurfacing, erosion control, and drainage work.
• Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of trail signage, markers, and related trail features.
• Operate assigned vehicles, mowers, UTVs/ATVs, trailers, small engine tools, or other trail maintenance equipment as trained and authorized.
• Load, haul, place, spread, and compact materials as assigned.
• Conduct basic equipment checks, cleaning, greasing, fluid checks, and report maintenance or safety concerns.
• Perform other related seasonal trail maintenance duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to meet the essential needs of the position, including:
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to perform outdoor physical labor in varying weather and trail conditions.
• Ability to work independently with remote supervision.
• Ability to communicate regularly and reliably with an off-site supervisor regarding work progress, weather impacts, trail conditions, equipment needs, and safety concerns.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to travel to assigned work locations; limited overnight travel may be required.
• Ability to safely operate or learn to operate assigned tools and equipment, subject to training, supervisor approval, and applicable federal and state labor laws.
• Ability to work on a flexible, weather-dependent schedule with no guarantee of weekly hours.
• Applicants must be legally eligible to perform the essential duties assigned to the position and must be able to comply with all applicable child labor, safety, travel, and equipment operation requirements.
• Applicants must be able to:
• Walk and work on uneven, steep, muddy, or rugged terrain.
• Bend, lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds and perform physical labor.
• Work outdoors for extended periods.
• Safely use assigned tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment
Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Trail maintenance, park maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, farming/ranching, construction, road maintenance, or similar outdoor work.
• Operating equipment such as mowers, tractors, skid steers, UTVs/ATVs, trailers, or similar equipment.
• Safely hauling trailers or transporting equipment.
• Basic equipment maintenance, mechanical aptitude, or small engine maintenance.
• Working independently in outdoor settings

Comments
This position may involve duties subject to federal and state youth employment laws, including but not limited to operation of vehicles, power-driven equipment, trail maintenance equipment, mowers, trailers, small engine tools, and work in remote outdoor locations.
Duties will be assigned based on the employee's qualifications, training, experience, supervisor authorization, and legal eligibility to perform the work. Some assignments may require independent travel to remote work locations, limited overnight travel, and the ability to work with remote supervision.
Schedule and Weather-Dependent Work
This is a flexible, seasonal, weather-dependent position. Work hours will vary based on trail conditions, weather, project priorities, staffing needs, and equipment availability.
Trail work may not be available during periods of rain, wet trail conditions, unsafe access, flooding, severe weather, or other conditions that prevent safe or productive work. During these periods, employees may not be scheduled and will not be paid for hours not worked.
Applicants should understand that this position may include busy work periods followed by periods of little or no scheduled work.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work is performed primarily outdoors in remote or semi-remote trail settings. Conditions may include heat, cold, rain, wind, insects, dust, mud, noise, steep slopes, wooded areas, uneven terrain, and changing trail conditions.
