Job description

The City of Fairview Heights is accepting applications for part time, seasonal, unskilled Parks Laborers through October 31, 2026. The hourly wage associated with this position is $18.00/hour and is scheduled on average to work 28 hours per week.

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO Supervisor of Parks
HOURLY WAGE $18.00/hour
SUMMARY OF POSITION
This is a non-supervisory position engaged in construction, repair, and operation of various types of equipment for the maintenance of City parks and grounds.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (Essential functions including the following and the Physical Requirements listed below):
โ€ข Performs general maintenance work to City parks and grounds
โ€ข Clean restrooms and pick up litter around parks and medians
โ€ข Operate mowers, tractors, vehicles, and other small equipment
โ€ข Utilize a variety of hand and power tools in parks and grounds landscape maintenance work
โ€ข Assist in basic routine maintenance of such equipment
โ€ข Water, repair, and fertilize lawns, plant and prune trees and shrubs, rake leaves and clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities
โ€ข Assist in preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and related facilities
โ€ข Assist in maintaining irrigation systems
โ€ข Perform general maintenance, construction, and repair of parks and grounds equipment
โ€ข Other tasks that may be assigned by supervisor
BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS
โ€ข High School Diploma or equivalent
โ€ข Driving record acceptable to the City of Fairview Heights
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED
โ€ข Ability to perform general construction and maintenance activities related to City parks and grounds
โ€ข Ability to speak, hear, write and communicate effectively, clearly and efficiently
โ€ข Ability to lift, squat, and bend to gather items from storage units
โ€ข Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
โ€ข Ability to make on-site inspections, including crawling into small areas, walking through mud, water, and other elements
โ€ข Ability to maintain regular and timely attendance
โ€ข Ability to move freely and to be mobile enough to do field work
โ€ข Ability to use equipment such as hammers, power tools, and electrical equipment
โ€ข Ability to move, bend, squat, lift, carry, and stretch freely with little to no discomfort
โ€ข Ability to stand and perform manual labor for long periods of time under adverse weathers conditions
โ€ข Ability to climb on/off machinery such as tractor or lawn mower
WORKING CONDITIONS
The work environment is normally those encountered by outside weather conditions. It consists of manual labor such as lifting and shoveling. The employee may be exposed to paint, calcium chloride, asphalt, concrete, and other chemicals. Additionally, this position requires attendance on weekends.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
โ€ข Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time
โ€ข Must be physically able to frequently grasp, grip, pull, push, twist, squat, bend at the waist, lift overhead, and climb ladders
โ€ข Ability to crawl into small areas, walk through mud and water
โ€ข Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis
