The Role and Why It's Important

Our Servers are at the heart of the Market Grille dining experience, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere while delivering excellent food and beverage service to every guest. In this role, you'll take orders, serve meals, prepare drinks, and make sure every customer leaves satisfied.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Greet guests with a smile, learn their names, and create a warm, welcoming experience from the moment they are seated

  • Present menus to guests, answer questions about menu items, and make recommendations upon request

  • Take food and beverage orders from guests, memorize or enter orders into the computer system for transmittal to kitchen staff

  • Serve food and beverages to guests and prepare or serve specialty dishes at tables as required

  • Prepare hot, cold, and mixed drinks for guests and chill bottles of wine as needed

  • Check with guests throughout their meal to ensure satisfaction and take action to correct any issues

  • Verify guest identification to ensure minimum age requirements are met for the consumption of alcoholic beverages

  • Prepare itemized checks, collect payment from guests, and accurately report tip income

  • Clean tables and counters after guests have finished dining

  • Stock service areas with supplies including coffee, food, tableware, and linens

  • Stay knowledgeable of all menu items including bar offerings where applicable

  • Wash dishes and order product and supplies as necessary

  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to guests who call

  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

  • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables

  • Perform simple addition and subtraction, copy figures, and count and record accurately

  • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing

  • No education requirement; 0 to 2 years of related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
