Job description

General Function:
In accordance with the Christian principles of the YMCA, this summer position involved assistance with the care of summer campers, ensuring their safety, well-being, happiness, growth and development. The Sr. Counselor lives in a cabin with the campers and assures all camper needs are taken care of. The Sr. Counselor is the primary staff member working with the campers and is responsible for planning and leading activities along with being present as a mentor and leader for Jr. Counselors and Counselors. This position also includes facilitation of a minimum of two activity areas for campers throughout the camp.
Know How:
  • Belief in the YMCA Mission and sets an example of high moral standards, Christian character and values.
  • An attitude of teamwork and enthusiasm of service to others.
  • Prior experience with children in camping or related youth work.
  • Physical ability to cover entire camp grounds and participate in all camp activities.
  • Must be able to obtain CPR/First Aid certifications.
  • Must be 19 years of age or older.

Principle Activities:
1. Live with campers and assist in the responsibility of their safety, health, welfare and happiness of each camper in your cabin.
2. Attend all staff meetings.
3. Assist campers in designing their daily schedule during camper activity sign-up.
4. Assist campers with writing home.
5. Work 5 daily activities along with cabin activities and evening programs and supervise Jr. Counselors and Counselors as they facilitate activities.
6. Assure all activity equipment is properly cared for, returned where it belongs and reported to Activities Director if replacement is needed.
7. Know your camper head counts and never leave a group unsupervised.
8. Adhere to schedules and planned activities of the camp.
9. Support the decision of camp leaders and work in unison with Head Counselors, Activities Director and Cabin Life Director to assure a safe and excellent camp program.
10. Manage camper behavior and disciplinary needs.
11. Notify Head Counselor of all incidents, behavior concerns and discipline problems.
12. Lead Morning Watch to include a devotion and our pledge of allegiance and help Jr. Counselors and Counselors with Morning Watch under your supervisor.
13. During check in and check out days greet parents, assure campers are comfortable, maintain order and have cabin/group activities planned for downtime.
14. Assure all camper items are claimed to the right owner minimizing lost and found.
15. Create an environment that cares for campers socially, emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually.
16. Assure there is always a staff member 19 or older within earshot or eyesight. Of the campers.
