Job description

The Aberdeen IronBirds, an Attain Sports team, are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, operating in founders Bill and Cal Ripken, Jr.'s home town. Recently elevated to a full-season club, the IronBirds are excited to offer career opportunities for new or experienced sports professionals. Seasonal employees working for the IronBirds will have the opportunity to learn the business of baseball and gain experience that will be valuable in full time employment in any sports organization.ย 

Positions Include:

  • Baseball Operations Associate
    • Plays a crucial role in the gameday operations, helping to make a professional and smooth baseball game according to MLB Player Development rules and operations. BOAs will be trained in a variety of different gameday tasks, including, but not limited to:
      • On-field Batperson: Collecting bats after each at bat, delivering balls to umpires)
      • Field Timing Coordinator (FTC): Operating the in-game field timing clocks between pitches, at bats, and innings; communicating via two-way radio with on-field umpires to resolve issues
      • MLB Stringer: Operate live feed of on-field action via MLB's stringer software for the Gameday feature on MiLB.tv and the MiLB At-Bat app
      • Grounds: Care and maintenance for Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium's playing surface, batting cages, and bullpens to provide the highest quality playing experience for the IronBirds and opponents
      • Visiting Clubhouse Assistant: Assist the visiting clubhouse manager in maintaining the clubhouse and providing service to visiting teams according to MLB clubhouse amenities rules and team needs
      • Other duties and tasks as assigned by IronBirds management
  • Bat Person
    • The Bat Person is a crucial role to the daily game of baseball. Each time an at-bat ends, the bat person will be required to collect any equipment discarded by the batter, as well as retrieving foul balls that remain in the field of play, providing new balls to the umpire, and performing other tasks as needed by the teams or umpires on field. Responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:
      • Retrieving bats, helmets, or other equipment from the field of play between batters or between innings, and removing all equipment from the on-deck circle of the team which batted the previous half-inning.
      • Retrieving foul balls
      • Providing new baseballs to the home plate umpire
      • Maintaining the bat rack, helmet rack, and equipment rack organization throughout the game
      • Assisting the clubhouse manager(s) in packing up the equipment from the dugout before the game
      • Bat persons will wear baseball uniforms and helmets during the game, which will be provided. Athletic sneakers will not be provided and should be worn by the bat person to work each shift
  • Grounds Crew
    • Sports Turf Seasonal Grounds Crew will work Ironbirds games and events from April-September. The Sports Turf Seasonal Grounds Crew will shadow, learn from, and assist the Sports Turf Superintendent and employees will perform duties such as, but not limited to:
      • Maintain and repair mound and plate areas.
      • Perform water/moisture management on mound and plate areas.
      • Participate in meetings regarding field use and game day logistic.
      • Perform coupler repair and maintenance when necessary.
      • Assist the Superintendent in maintaining the synthetic playing surface to a professional level.
      • Uphold the Company's landscape vision by assisting in oversight of outsourced landscape contractors.
      • Identify internal and external customer needs and service accordingly with pride and a positive attitude.
      • Provide feedback and suggestions to the department as needed.
      • Other duties as assigned- our interns assume real responsibilities and play a vital role in our sports turf operations
  • Pitch Clock and Stringer
    • Must complete Pitch clock operator and Stringer trainings satisfactorily as issued by Major League Baseball
    • When acting as Field Timing Coordinator (Pitch Clock operator):
      • Pay close attention to the ongoing baseball game to provide accurate and timely pitch clock operation between pitches, batters, innings, and during pitching changes
      • Communicate via radio with umpires for in-game special circumstances
    • When acting as Stringer:
      • Pay close attention to the ongoing baseball game to provide accurate data input for the live feed distributed through MiLB.com and the MiLB First Pitch app.
      • Accurately mark plays as they occur, including pitches, batted balls and outcomes, outs, and all other in-game elements.
      • Collaborate closely with other members of the baseball operations department within the gameday Press Box environment, including the Pitch Clock Operator, Official Scorer, Director of Creative Services, and others
      • Communicate issues effectively with peers and supervisors to provide accurate and professional service to the club's gameday staff
  • Audio Operator
    • The Audio Operator (A1) will play a crucial role in how IronBirds fans experience baseball games. Successful candidates have a passion for production and entertainment, and a drive to gain experience on their way to a career in sports entertainment. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
      • Manage the main audio board (Allen & Heath) and audio software Mac laptop
      • Communicate with technical director
      • Communicate with in-stadium graphics operator
      • Assist Creative Services Director and other staff to set up, use, and strike any gameday equipment as needed
      • Occasionally operate gameday production equipment including, but not limited to, graphics station, sports bug and other production equipment
      • Occasional opportunities to work at non-gameday events for in-house production including but not limited to video, audio, camera and social media streaming for events like:
        • High School Graduations
        • Public IronBirds non-baseball events
        • Private events as necessary and available
  • Camera Operator (Photo & Video)
    • The Photo / Video Camera Operator (Wireless) will capture content for consumption by IronBirds fans attending games at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, watching the IronBirds' MiLB.tv stream, and viewing the IronBirds' social media channels throughout the season, and will have a chance to learn and grow within a well-respected minor league sports environment on their way to a career in sports entertainment, production, or all of the above.
    • Responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:
      • Manage our wireless camera system and assorted wireless production gear for in-game use
      • Communicate with Technical Director to capture and anticipate gameday action / in-between innings content
      • Assist Creative Services Director and other staff to set up, use, and strike any gameday equipment as needed
      • Occasionally operate gameday production equipment including, but not limited to, DLSR photography and / or other video production equipment
      • Occasional opportunities to work at non-gameday events for in-house production including but not limited to video, audio, camera and social media streaming including:
        • High School Graduations
        • Public IronBirds non-baseball events
        • Private Events as necessary and as availability dictates
  • Graphics Assistant
    • The Graphics Assistant will produce and manage content for consumption by IronBirds fans attending games at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, watching the IronBirds' MiLB.tv stream, and viewing the IronBirds' social media channels throughout the season, and will have a chance to learn and grow within a well-respected minor league sports environment on their way to a career in graphic design, sports entertainment, production, or all of the above. Responsibilities for the rule include but are not limited to:
      • Produce graphics at the direction of the Creative Services Director for in-house production to be displayed on Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium's 1500 square foot HD video board and MiLB.tv stream
      • Operate in-stadium video graphics equipment, including but not limited to graphics PC station and sports bug
      • Communicate with technical director during live events
      • Creating/updating in-game graphics including but not limited to sports bug, fan contests, in-game adjustments as needed
      • Assist Creative Services Director and other staff to set up, use, and strike any gameday equipment as needed
      • Occasional opportunities for operating gameday production equipment including but not limited to TV production switcher, videoboard controller, social media streaming and audio equipment
      • Occasional opportunities to work non-game day events for in-house production including but not limited to video, audio, camera, and social media streaming operation
  • Technical Director
    • The Technical Director (TD) will play a crucial role in how IronBirds fans experience baseball games whether they are in-person in Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium or watching the IronBirds' MiLB.tv stream online, by responding quickly to in-game and between-innings action, operating the IronBirds' 1500 square foot HD video board, and collaborating with other Creative Services roles on gameday and throughout the year. Responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:
      • Manage the TV production switcher for stadium videoboard, in-house feed and MiLB.tv subscribers
      • Communicate with hand-held camera operator
      • Communicate with in-stadium graphics operator
      • Manage videoboard controller for stadium production / in-game action
      • Assist Creative Services Director and other staff to set up, use, and strike any gameday equipment as needed

    • The IronBirds seek candidates for the Flight Crew for the upcoming season! Are you always the star of the show? The biggest personality in the room? Do you love to make people laugh, cheer, and jump out of their seats? If you answered yes, the Flight Crew, the Aberdeen IronBirds' in-park hype squad, is right for you! We need enthusiastic, excited, fun-loving people to entertain our fans before, during, and after IronBirds games! If you did your job right, they won't remember the score of the game, but they will know they had fun! This role reports to the Director of Marketing and will also receive gameday direction from the Director of Creative Services and/or Partnerships Department. Responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:
      • Assist the On-Field MC and the IronBirds' Corporate Partnerships Department in activating and fulfilling sponsorship obligations, including in-game promotions, contests, t-shirt tosses, and more
      • Assist in setup/breakdown of gameday props and materials for entertainment
      • Prepares and facilitates giveaways during the games
      • Research and recommend engaging activities to use during in-game promotions.
      • Interact with crowd during home games creating a fun and engaging atmosphere.
      • Source and escort contestants for in-game entertainment
      • Support and take cue from the on-field MC host during game days
  • In Game Host/MC
    • The Aberdeen IronBirds seek candidates for the role of in-game host/MC. Are you a natural born entertainer? Do you love the roar of the crowd?     • Responsibilities
      • Effectively communicate with gameday production staff and be a contributing member to the entertainment team
      • Coordinate with assistant performers/crew in-game (Flight Crew, mascots, camera operator)
      • Coordinate with gameday entertainment staff and Corporate Partnerships Director to meet gameday objectives
      • Take responsibility for activation of sponsorship materials, contests, and other promotions
      • Find and motivate fan participants for between inning contests / promotions
      • Assist in setup/break down of props and materials for gameday use as needed
  • Fan Host
    • The IronBirds seek candidates for Fan Hosts to provide exceptional customer service to IronBird Fans at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium to the highest professional standard.
    • Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Fan Hosts include:
      • Greet all members and guests with pleasantries as they enter and exit the stadium
      • Assist fans in different seating sections of the park, finding seats and making sure all fans are in their proper ticketed areas
      • Answer questions from fans to the best of their ability regarding the ballpark
      • Scan fans' tickets at the entry gates and help to direct them to their sections
      • Provide a positive customer experience to our Kids Zone customers
      • Ensure the safety of all fans
      • Provide feedback and suggestions to department as needed
