What is a search engineer?

Search Engineers are specialized software engineers who design, build, and improve search systems that help users find relevant information quickly and efficiently. Their work often involves developing algorithms for indexing, querying, and ranking large volumes of data, as well as optimizing search accuracy and speed. Search Engineers may also work with natural language processing, machine learning, and relevance tuning to enhance the user search experience on websites, apps, or internal databases.

What does a search engineer do?

A search engineer has two primary responsibilities: to develop and program search engines and to optimize web content to achieve the best possible rankings in search results. As a search engineer, your job duties depend on your employer. If you work for a search engine company, like Google or Bing, then your job is to create the web application and algorithms that index websites and web pages to aggregate and rank search results. If you work for an e-commerce website or another business reliant on products or services, then your focus is on website analysis, keyword research, and content marketing.

  • Present findings and recommendations clearly to clients, with support from PMs.

  • Run technical SEO audits using tools like Screaming Frog and SEMrush, and summarize findings in plain language with prioritized action steps.

  • Implement on-page SEO updates directly in CMS platforms (primarily WordPress), including meta tags, headers, alt text, internal links, and schema markup.

  • Conduct keyword research using Ahrefs or SEMrush to identify primary and secondary targets for core pages, blog content, and campaigns.

  • Create SEO briefs and outlines to guide writers or internal team members on structure, keyword usage, and topic coverage.

  • Review draft content and optimize for SEO before publishing, ensuring readability, scannability, and performance.

  • Collaborate with developers during website projects to ensure SEO requirements (like crawlability, redirects, and proper URL structure) are met before launch.

  • Set up and configure SEO tools for new websites (Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, basic tracking parameters, etc.).

  • Generate clear monthly reports for clients using GA4 and other tools, highlighting wins, identifying drops, and suggesting next steps.

  • Research backlink opportunities through competitor analysis, brand mentions, and digital PR partners; support execution where relevant.

  • Stay informed about Google algorithm updates and evaluate how they might impact client sites; recommend adjustments accordingly.

  • Attend client meetings (as needed) to walk through SEO performance and explain strategy in non-technical terms.

  • Flag technical blockers or content gaps and collaborate with project managers or client strategists to get them resolved.

Must Have Qualifications:
