Be Seen First

After you apply to this job, you can share why you’re interested to jump to the top of the candidate list.

Key responsibilities

  • Represent Toggle SEO at local business networking events and community opportunities throughout Charleston.

  • Build relationships with business owners, professionals, and referral partners to identify potential business opportunities.

  • Create qualified introductions between prospective clients and the owner of Toggle SEO, and follow up to maintain relationships.

Job description

The Position

The Business Development Specialist will serve as one of the primary faces of Toggle SEO throughout the Charleston business community.

Your job will be to develop relationships with local business owners, contractors, referral partners, and other professionals who may benefit from working with Toggle SEO or who may be able to introduce us to businesses that do.

You will regularly attend networking events, Chamber of Commerce events, business organizations, industry events, BNI meetings, community events, and other opportunities where meaningful business relationships can be developed.

You are not expected to independently sell and close complicated digital marketing contracts.

Instead, your primary responsibility is to identify strong potential opportunities, build rapport, qualify the relationship, and create an introduction to the owner of Toggle SEO for a more in-depth strategy and sales conversation.

We want someone who can walk into a room where they don't know anyone and walk out having created several genuine new relationships.

What You'll Be Doing

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Representing Toggle SEO at local business networking events throughout the Charleston area
  • Attending Chamber of Commerce events, BNI meetings, business association events, trade organizations, community events, and other networking opportunities
  • Building relationships with business owners, executives, contractors, and local professionals
  • Identifying businesses that could potentially benefit from Toggle SEO's services
  • Developing relationships with referral partners who regularly work with local business owners
  • Creating qualified introductions between prospective clients and the owner of Toggle SEO
  • Scheduling meetings and strategy calls with qualified prospective clients
  • Following up with relationships developed through networking and community involvement
  • Maintaining organized records of contacts, conversations, opportunities, and follow-ups
  • Staying in regular contact with promising relationships rather than relying on one-time interactions
  • Looking for creative opportunities to increase Toggle SEO's presence within the Charleston business community
  • Helping identify organizations, associations, sponsorships, and events where Toggle SEO should have a presence
  • Learning enough about Toggle SEO's services to confidently discuss what we do and identify potential opportunities
  • Working directly with company ownership to develop new business opportunities

What This Job Is NOT

This is not a call-center position.

You will not spend your day making hundreds of cold calls from a script.

This is also not a position where you will be expected to become a technical expert in SEO, Google Ads, Meta Ads, website development, or marketing automation.

You should become comfortable discussing what Toggle SEO does and recognizing when there may be an opportunity for us to help a business.

When a prospective client is seriously interested, your responsibility is to create the opportunity and bring the appropriate people together.

Our owner will handle the majority of the detailed strategy discussions, proposals, and closing conversations.

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for someone with previous experience in business development, outside sales, relationship development, account development, community relations, or another B2B role that required building relationships with business owners and decision-makers.

The ideal candidate is naturally comfortable meeting new people and does not need to be told how to start conversations or build rapport.

You should be someone who genuinely enjoys networking rather than someone who simply tolerates it as part of a sales job.

Strong candidates will have:

  • Previous B2B sales or business development experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience developing professional relationships in person
  • Confidence speaking with business owners, executives, and decision-makers
  • Excellent follow-up and organizational habits
  • Professional appearance and communication
  • The ability to comfortably attend events independently and represent the company
  • The ability to recognize legitimate business opportunities without aggressively selling everyone you meet
  • A relationship-first approach to business development
  • Strong judgment and professionalism
  • The ability to learn and clearly communicate the basics of digital marketing services
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to attend events throughout the Charleston area

Especially Valuable Experience

Existing relationships within the Charleston business community are strongly preferred.

We are particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds in industries such as:

  • Commercial insurance
  • Banking or business banking
  • Payroll or HR services
  • Staffing and recruiting
  • Construction or contractor-related sales
  • Building materials or construction suppliers
  • Restoration
  • Commercial services
  • Local media
  • Telecommunications
  • Business consulting
  • SaaS or technology sales
  • Hospitality or event sales
  • Business associations or Chambers of Commerce
  • Professional services

Experience working directly with contractors, home service businesses, or small-to-medium-sized business owners is especially valuable.

Previous digital marketing experience is helpful but is not required.

We would rather hire someone who is exceptional at building relationships and teach them our industry than hire a digital marketer who does not enjoy business development.

How Success Will Be Measured

This position is about creating meaningful business relationships, not simply attending events.

Performance will be evaluated based on factors including:

  • Qualified prospective client relationships developed
  • Qualified introductions made
  • Meetings scheduled with company ownership
  • Sales opportunities created
  • New clients generated
  • New recurring revenue generated
  • Quality and retention of clients generated
  • Referral relationships developed
  • Consistency of follow-up
  • Growth of Toggle SEO's presence within the Charleston business community

We are looking for quality over quantity.

One strong relationship with the right business owner or referral partner can be significantly more valuable than dozens of unqualified conversations.
