Solutions Engineer

Full-time

Job description

ABOUT METRC
Metrc is the most trusted and experienced provider of cannabis regulatory systems in the United States and is growing extremely rapidly to expand globally. We provide a solution that combines advanced software, radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, a dedicated customer-support team, and a secure database to track and trace cannabis from growth, harvest, and processing to testing, transport, and sale. As Solutions Engineer, you will have the opportunity to thrive in a fast-moving, fluid environment, and be passionate about implementing change, great processes and procedures in a commercial setting at a fast-growing technology company.
GENERAL OVERVIEW
As a Solutions Engineer, you will own end-to-end deployment of Metrc's product suite for cannabis operators across two distinct customer profiles: brands deploying Retail ID for compliant label printing at production and packaging facilities, and retailers deploying Retail ID for inventory intake, in-store scanning, and POS workflows. You will serve as the primary technical and operational partner for these customers from late-stage commitment conversations through go-live and into early adoption, ensuring they achieve realized value from the product.
This is a foundational role on a newly established Solutions Engineering function. You will help establish the discovery frameworks, rollout playbooks, engagement standards, and set the bar for how Metrc shows up for its customers. You will work directly with the VP of Product and partner closely with Sales, Account Management, Support, Product, and Quality. This position requires technical fluency, deployment instinct, and the ability to operate credibly with executive sponsors and operations staff alike.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Core duties and responsibilities include the following.
• Run technical and operational discovery with prospects. For brand customers: production facility setup, packaging-line environment, existing labeling workflows, printer hardware, and SKU complexity. For retail customers: store count, POS environment, scanning workflows, and IT readiness. For both: state-by-state compliance variation and operational change appetite.
• Build feasibility assessments, statements of work, and rollout plans that surface deployment risk before contracts close.
• Partner with Sales on demos and technical Q&A as the credible technical voice in the room.
• Design and execute implementations end-to-end: configure Retail ID, integrate with POS systems (Treez, Dutchie, Flowhub, BLAZE, Cova, and others) for retail customers and with packaging-line printer hardware for brand customers, and coordinate hardware logistics for multi-site deployments.
• Lead pilot deployments - pilot facility for brands labeling, pilot store for retailers integrating- capture learnings, and translate them into customer-specific rollout playbooks.
• Own the workflows and first-wave of evaluation around go-live support, on-site or remote depending on the engagement.
• Develop and maintain documentation, rollout playbooks, and reference artifacts that support continuity across engagements and accelerate ramp for future prospects.
• Feed structured signal back to Product on implementation friction and emerging customer patterns to help shape the product roadmap.
• May perform other additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
• 5+ years of experience in solutions engineering, implementation consulting, or field deployment at multi-location retail technology companies, enterprise labeling software vendors, packaging-line integrators, or manufacturing execution systems serving regulated CPG is required.
• Operational instincts honed across real deployments are required. The successful candidate knows what tends to break on day one (network, printer, or staff challenges), and treats rollouts as problems to manage rather than features to deliver.
• Technical fluency with REST APIs, common POS integration patterns, barcode and scanning hardware, label and printer hardware, and store-IT or facility-IT topology is required. The successful candidate holds a credible technical conversation with the customer's IT lead without being a software engineer by background.
• Strong customer presence is required. The successful candidate can run an executive level conversation in the morning and a backroom or production-floor workflow analysis in the afternoon, and be effective in both rooms.
• Discovery-first instincts are required. The successful candidate reframes customer requests through structured discovery rather than executing the ask as stated and being surprised when adoption fails.
• Direct experience deploying compliance-driven label printing workflows (Loftware, NiceLabel, BarTender by Seagull Scientific, TEKLYNX, or similar) is highly desirable.
• Direct experience deploying retail technology at multi-location operators (Toast, Square for Retail, Lightspeed Retail, Shopify POS, Revel, NCR, Aloha, or Clover) is highly desirable.
• Background in cannabis, regulated CPG, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, or other regulated multi-site industries is advantageous.
• Familiarity with Metrc or other state-mandated compliance tracking systems is advantageous.
TRAVEL
This position will require regular travel up to 30% of work time, weighted toward pilot deployments and first-wave go-lives. Travel is bounded and engagement-driven - planned in advance with each customer, not reactive. For example, travel might include:
• Customer implementations (pilot and first-wave go-lives at brand production facilities and retail locations)
• Industry events
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Remote position
• Frequently required to sit
• Frequently required to talk or hear
• Continually utilize visual acuity to operate equipment, read technical information, and/or use a keyboard and mouse
• Periodic on-site customer engagement at brand production facilities, retail stores, and corporate offices may require standing, walking, and observation of operational environments
The above is intended to describe the general content of and requirements for the performance of this job. It is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or physical requirements. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Metrc is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and all qualified applicants and team members will be considered for employment and advancement without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, national origin, age, marital status, disability, genetic information, military or veteran status or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.
