This position is responsible for assessing product chemical hazard classifications, authoring Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and maintaining SDS document inventories and access systems. The role also provides internal advisory services on product hazard reduction options (e.g., alternate ingredients), toxicology data interpretation, and product risk matters - including industrial hygiene - in support of Nutrien's global operations.
What You'll Do:
  • Author SDSs - Information Gathering and Documentation
  • Conduct chemical hazard assessments of new and existing chemical products (i.e., basic chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, adjuvants) and mixtures thereof per Global Hazard System (GHS)and country specific classification requirements
  • Author Safety Data Sheet (SDS) documents for Nutrien products using SDS generation software
  • Consider appropriate regulatory requirements beyond chemical hazard classification to ensure all relevant designations and warning statements are present and correct on the SDS and/or related documents (i.e., EPA, SARA, IARC, Proposition 65)
  • Interpret lab reports for information that would affect a product hazard designation
  • Develop and maintain classification "weight of evidence" files
  • Monitor Chemical hazard classification regulatory changes for impacts to Nutrien SDSs (North America & International)
  • Acquire and maintain supporting files upon which classifications and exemptions are based
  • Gather product formulation and raw material SDSs
  • Understand product uses e.g. fertilizers, adjuvants, pesticides, etc
  • Identify potential for chemical reactions and key reaction products
  • Use authoring software to generate a draft SDS and fine tune output on a weight of evidence basis

Internal SDS Management - Manage SDS inventories
  • Maintain internal SDS repositories for Nutrien products, ensuring accessibility to retail and internal stakeholders
  • Maintain supporting files and documentation for each product SDS
  • Collaborate with the Regulatory Leadership Team to ensure knowledge retention and proper documentation of both team and cross-functional processes related to SDS creation, classification, and compliance

Other Duties
  • Perform other SDS or product safety-related tasks as required to support business priorities and regulatory compliance

What You'll Bring:
  • University degree or college diploma (BS/BA) in chemistry or a related scientific
  • Minimum 3 years of practical experience in product hazard classification and SDS authoring using SDS authoring software
  • Demonstrated experience in authoring pesticide and/or adjuvant SDSs
  • Background in reviewing and interpreting toxicological reports and/or experience in industrial hygiene
  • Ability to interpret technical data and apply weight-of-evidence decision-making to reach defensible classification decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across technical functions and prioritize responses appropriately
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and change-management skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Willingness to learn, teach, and share knowledge with teammates, peers, and management

Preferred:
  • University degree or college diploma in toxicology, industrial hygiene, or a related discipline, with practical application experience in SDS authoring
  • 4+ years of experience in SDS authoring and classification using the GHS framework (North America and international markets)

Compensation & Benefits:
The salary range for this role, Deerfield Corporate Office, is between $91,200 - $143,000. While we provide this range as general guidance, several factors are taken into consideration when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, candidate skill set, experience and training, licensure and certifications, work location, and other business and organizational needs. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.

In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our program(s) where discretionary pay out of awards is reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.
