Job description

SUMMARY:
Functions
as a member of the Surgical Team to provide a safe and therapeutic environment
for the Surgical patient and to assist the surgeon. Provides care for patients
of all ages, including infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functions in the surgical scrub role:
Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in instrumentation and
materials, such as sutures.
Demonstrates proper preparation and passing of needles, sutures,
surgical drains, medications and hemostatic agents.

Assists the surgeon as necessary, anticipating needs.

Demonstrates knowledge of surgical field set-up, including knowledge
of instruments and equipment.
Assists with the optimum utilization of resources,
including OR time by:
Using physician preference cards
Anticipating needs of the team
Using the proper resource person
Selecting equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner
Uses supplies in a cost-effective manner
Demonstrates knowledge of AORN standards of asepsis,
including but not limited to:

Surgical scrubbing, donning of gowns and gloves
Creating and maintaining surgical field(s).
Attentiveness to contamination possibilities, responding appropriately
when it occurs
Demonstrates knowledge of Retained Surgical
Items/Surgical Counts protocol.
Demonstrates competency in preparing and utilizing
equipment including, but not limited to:
OR tables
Harmonic scalpel
Lasers
Suction devices
Hydrothermablation machines
Tourniquets
Generators
All powered instruments
Drills
Saws
Maintains a safe environment for patients,
physicians, and other surgical services staff.
Assists in safely moving patients to and from the
operating table.
Demonstrates knowledge of the proper procedure for
the breakdown of the sterile field and preparation of instruments for
decontamination and return to Central Supply and Processing.
Maintains a positive, professional relationship with
peers, patients, patient families/care-givers and other colleagues.
Maintains current BLS certification.
Participates in lifelong learning through continuing
education.
Participates in community activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED is required

Completion of at least one of the following options is required:

Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program, or

Graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program, or

Current certification as a CST, or

Current NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered), or

3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist

Successful completion of a Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program

Successful completion of the Community College of Rhode Island's certificate surgical technologist program

Current BLS Certification is required upon hire Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
