Metalico, a leading scrap metal recycling company in the Northeast United States, is seeking a driven, self-motivated, and charismatic individual to enhance our successful Pittsburgh team as a Commercial Scrap Metal Buyer. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in our procurement and supply chain operation, acting as a key driver in sourcing, purchasing, and pricing both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal from various businesses and industrial accounts. A successful buyer at Metalico will be proactive, detail-oriented, dedicated to fostering supplier relationships, accurately grading materials, negotiating prices, and ensuring both material quality and profitability while adhering to company policies and industry regulations. This position is well suited for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, possesses a passion for scrap metal recycling, is knowledgeable about the industry terminology, and is adept at tracking market trends and reports. Responsibilities:
  • Purchase ferrous and/or non-ferrous scrap metals from suppliers and customers.
  • Be in the know of local major construction demolition projects to salvage metals.
  • Ensure purchased materials meet quality and specification requirements.
  • Capable to accurately identify, sort, grade and price scrap materials as needed.
  • Monitor market trends and report pricing conditions to management.
  • Maintain accurate purchase records, scale tickets, and documentation.
  • Interact with the Operations Department concerning accurate grading based on quality of scrap metal delivered to the plant.
  • Interact with scale operations to accurately input purchases across the scale.
  • Coordinate with yard operations for unloading, sorting, and inventory control.
  • Maintain a list of industrial and commercial accounts producing scrap metal and contact on a regular basis to buy material (includes contact via phone and site visits).
  • Gather and maintain appropriate information about the local market for raw material concerning cost trends, availability of supply, and competitor information.
  • Arrange economical transportation of material to the plant, ensure efficient handling of material (maintain strong communication and working relationship with transportation department and operations).
  • Provide monthly reports including estimated inbound volume, type and grade of material, and price structure for material.
  • Negotiate pricing based on market conditions and company margins.
  • Build and maintain relationships with peddlers, contractors, and industrial accounts.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required.
  • College degree in business or engineering or equivalent business experience is desirable.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a scrap business or 10 years in a related field, preferably in ferrous and nonferrous sales.
  • Ability to identify, grade, and determine quality ferrous metals.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Positive attitude, proactive, goal-oriented, self-starter, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Very strong interpersonal skills that will lead to a strong sales acumen.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Dependable, flexible, and able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Organized and attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to multi-task with excellent time management skills.

Work Hours:
  • Monday through Friday, 43+ hour work week, Saturdays, and overtime will be required to business needs.
