Job Summary
The Assistant Men's Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach and Director of Athletics in all aspects of operating a highly competitive NJCAA men's basketball program. Responsibilities include assisting with recruiting, player development, practice planning, scouting, game preparation, academic advising, eligibility compliance, student-athlete support, fundraising, community engagement, and basketball camp operations. The position plays a key role in promoting student-athlete success both academically and athletically while ensuring compliance with NJCAA, conference, and institutional regulations. The successful candidate will possess strong leadership, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and community partners. A commitment to student development, academic achievement, and competitive excellence is essential.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Assist the Head Men's Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics in the administration and operation of a successful NJCAA men's basketball program. Responsibilities include recruiting, player development, practice and game preparation, scouting, team travel coordination, academic support, compliance oversight, fundraising, community engagement, and camp operations.
Support the academic success of student-athletes by monitoring academic progress, assisting with course selection and registration, coordinating with faculty and student services personnel, and helping ensure student-athletes remain eligible and on track toward graduation. Prepare and submit documentation for institutional, conference, and NJCAA academic and athletic awards.
Assist in identifying, recruiting, and retaining qualified student-athletes in accordance with NJCAA, conference, institutional, and departmental policies. Provide individual and team instruction focused on skill development, strategy, leadership, and personal growth.
Support compliance efforts by maintaining knowledge of NJCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations related to eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, and student-athlete participation. Prepare required reports and documentation and assist coaches and administrators with rule interpretation and implementation.
Promote the men's basketball program and the Athletics Department through community outreach, marketing initiatives, social media engagement, alumni relations, and special events. Assist with the planning and execution of fundraising activities, donor engagement efforts, and youth camps that support program goals.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and student-centered environment that supports the mission of Salt Lake Community College and the development of student-athletes both on and off the court.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of basketball principles, strategies, skill development, and player evaluation at the intercollegiate level.
- Knowledge of NJCAA, conference, and institutional rules governing athletics participation, eligibility, recruiting, and compliance.
- Understanding of student-athlete academic support services, advising practices, and graduation requirements.
- Ability to analyze game film, evaluate opponents, develop scouting reports, and assist in strategic game planning.
- Ability to recruit, mentor, motivate, and develop student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong organizational, administrative, and time-management skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, community members, and external partners.
- Ability to assist with fundraising, community engagement, marketing, and program promotion initiatives.
- Proficiency with common office software, student information systems, and athletic technology platforms.
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum qualifications
Bachelor's degree required. Two (2) years basketball coaching experience in an educational setting (i. e. , high school, NJCAA, NCAA), or professional level. Part time experience may be considered on a prorated basis.
