What does a science recruiter do?

A Science Recruiter specializes in finding, screening, and hiring professionals for positions in scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. They work closely with research institutions, laboratories, and companies to understand their staffing needs and source candidates with the right technical expertise. Science Recruiters often review resumes, conduct interviews, and manage the hiring process from start to finish, ensuring both the employer and candidate are a good fit. Their role requires an understanding of scientific terminology and industry trends to effectively match talent with job opportunities.

What are some common challenges faced by science recruiters when sourcing candidates for specialized scientific roles?

One of the main challenges Science Recruiters encounter is identifying and engaging candidates with highly specific technical expertise, especially for niche scientific positions. The talent pool for certain scientific specializations may be limited, requiring recruiters to leverage advanced sourcing techniques and build strong networks within academic and professional communities. Additionally, recruiters often need to thoroughly understand scientific terminology and requirements to accurately assess candidate suitability and communicate effectively with both clients and candidates. Staying updated on emerging scientific fields and maintaining strong relationships with passive candidates are also key to overcoming these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a science recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Science Recruiter, you need a solid understanding of scientific disciplines, strong sourcing abilities, and experience with recruitment best practices, often supported by a degree in science or human resources. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), recruitment platforms like LinkedIn, and Boolean search techniques is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, persuasive communication, and adaptability are crucial for building relationships with candidates and stakeholders. These skills ensure the effective identification and placement of qualified talent in scientific organizations, driving successful hiring outcomes.

Job description

ABOUT FIRST RESONANCE
At First Resonance, we construct the software backbone powering the physical revolution. From deep-space exploration and eVTOL aircraft to robotics and advanced nuclear power, we empower engineers and operators to design, manufacture, and iterate faster. By pairing intuitive UX with predictive data science, we are eliminating legacy operational friction and elevating product quality across hardtech industries.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Technical Talent Acquisition Partner (Hardtech focus) to lead full-lifecycle recruitment for our core engineering and product functions. In this high-impact role, you will drive candidate pipelines for Software Engineers, Product Managers, and Forward Deployed Engineers, while expanding into key corporate positions (Sales, Finance, Ops) as we scale.
You'll work directly alongside founders, engineering leaders, and hiring managers to define hiring bars, refine candidate evaluation, and attract top-tier talent to our team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • End-to-End Recruiting: Drive full lifecycle recruitment-from outbound sourcing and candidate screening to offer architecture and closing.
  • Hiring Strategy & Alignment: Partner with department leaders to build detailed job profiles, standardized scorecards, and structured interview loops.
  • Proactive Sourcing: Leverage creative outbound channels (LinkedIn Recruiter, GitHub, hardware/engineering networks, referrals) to engage passive technical talent.
  • Structured Interviewing: Facilitate debrief sessions and post-interview calibration meetings to maintain high hiring standards and minimize bias.
  • Metrics & ATS Management: Ensure high pipeline visibility and tracking accuracy within our ATS to optimize conversion rates and time-to-fill metrics.
  • Candidate Experience & Brand: Serve as a primary ambassador for First Resonance, delivering an exceptional, authentic experience across all touchpoints.
  • Scale & Operations: Draft recruitment assets, outreach campaigns, and candidate materials while assisting with non-technical hiring as capacity allows.

QUALIFCATIONS
  • 5+ years of full-cycle technical recruiting experience across in-house startup environments or specialized recruitment agencies.
  • Hardtech / Deep-Tech Exposure: Prior experience recruiting within aerospace, defense, energy, manufacturing, or regulated hardware sectors.
  • Proven Track Record in Tech Hiring: Success in filling complex technical roles, specifically Software Engineering, Product, and Solutions Engineering profiles.
  • Outbound Sourcing Mindset: Skilled at building active candidate networks rather than relying solely on inbound applicant flow.
  • Data-Informed Approach: Demonstrated ability to track recruiting funnel metrics and leverage ATS data to solve hiring bottlenecks.
  • Strong Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a candidate-first approach.
  • Startup Agility: Thrives in fast-moving, evolving environments where you can build processes from the ground up.

NICE-TO-HAVE
  • Prior experience sourcing Forward Deployed Engineers or customer-facing technical talent.
  • Hands-on experience developing hiring infrastructure (interview guides, scorecard systems, calibration models).
  • Familiarity with technical evaluation and candidate assessment platforms.

BENEFITS & PERKS
  • Health Insurance; medical, vision, dental, & life insurance.
  • Paid Parental Leave.
  • Employee Stock Option Plan.
  • Team outings, group lunches, open office, happy hours.
  • Paid holidays, sick days.
  • Flexible Friday and PTO.
  • 401K.

First Resonance is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to building an inclusive and diverse workforce.
First Resonance participates in E-Verify. As part of our onboarding process, a new hire's Form I-9 information will be shared with the federal government to confirm they are authorized to work in the U.S.
Pay is based on factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and skillset, and location.
First Resonance accelerates the speed and reliability of hardware development for companies manufacturing the next generation of hardware products. This includes space exploration, electric airplanes, autonomous vehicles, nuclear reactors, robotics, and more. We are a group of software, hardware, and manufacturing engineers that are bringing the best of modern UX and data science to an industry that has been overly rigid in its innovation. We are removing the barriers preventing radical advancement by providing tools to manufacturing engineers and operators to move information more freely, collaborate with their teams more easily, and use the power of data to predict problems and provide insights that result in better hardware quality and delivery.
