Description
Husson University has an opening for an Instructor/ Science Lab Coordinator with experience working in a lab setting and teaching at the university level.
The Laboratory Coordinator component of this position includes responsibility for the daily operations of the labs, including Chemistry, Biology, and Anatomy & Physiology. Daily operations include maintaining and operating equipment, maintaining lab inventories, ordering equipment and supplies for the labs, and maintaining physical and written safety requirements of the labs. The Lab Coordinator is also responsible for preparing necessary lab materials for daily lab instruction.
The Lab Coordinator facilitates lab instruction by adjuncts and has supervisory responsibility over student lab assistants working in the science labs.
The faculty component of this position may include responsibilities for teaching and spearheading Husson's on-campus programs, including Animal Care and Behavior. The department determines specific teaching assignments, but the teaching load is a minimum of three credit hours per semester.
Example of Duties
The successful candidate will possess the necessary organizational and interpersonal skills to carry out the following duties.
General Lab Maintenance and Safety Compliance:
  • Maintaining general lab equipment including cleaning and inventory
  • Effective and proactive ordering of equipment and supplies for all the science labs and off-site partner animal care facilities
  • Maintaining, installing, troubleshooting, and operating laboratory equipment
  • Maintaining safe working conditions for all instructors and students in the labs using appropriate inventory, equipment, and storage
  • Safely managing the collection and disposal of lab waste
  • Maintaining safety paperwork in accordance with federal, state, and Husson University policies
  • Maintaining standard operating procedures for lab safety and waste management
  • Training personnel in site-specific laboratory safety
  • Upholding lab cleanliness and appearance
Supervision and Leadership:
  • Preparing weekly lab materials
  • Training students and other lab instructors to operate laboratory equipment
  • Coordinating weekly meetings for General Biology and Microbiology labs
  • Coordinating assessment data reporting and compliance for biology labs
  • In coordination with the Chair, developing the lab schedule for the academic year
  • In cooperation with other relevant Science faculty, hiring and supervising student workers
Instructor Duties:
  • Teach, monitor, and consult on on-campus programs, including Animal Care and Behavior
  • Teach and assess student performance in lab courses
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students as needed in science majors
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications
Required
  • Must have a minimum M.S. in the sciences with both teaching and laboratory management experience.
  • Must be able to work independently and function collegially and effectively within a team environment.
  • Must be comfortable preparing solutions, media and cultures, and operating and maintaining lab instruments. Technical/administrative experience in laboratory operations and safety compliance is a plus.
Preferred
  • PhD in the sciences and 3+ years' experience in laboratory management
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring student laboratory assistants
  • OSHA and HAZWOPER training

Work Environment:
The job may require the employee to stand for extended periods of time. The position has a significant laboratory component, with specified protocols for methods and safety.
