Under minimal supervision, performs laboratory assistant functions. The Laboratory Assistant works closely with the Science Lab Coordinator to meet the needs of the Natural Sciences Department and faculty members.

Essential Responsibilities
1. Follow all appropriate safety guidelines.
2. Ensure that lab areas are clean and organized.
3. Prepare lab materials for upcoming lab activities according to the schedule.
4. Put away lab materials for completed labs.
5. Refill disposables (paper towels, gloves, deionized water, soap, etc).
6. Assist lab coordinator with maintaining an updated inventory and alert lab coordinator if supplies need to be re-ordered.
7. Assist lab coordinator with re-stocking incoming supplies.
8. Assist lab coordinator in beginning & end of semester tasks.
9. Assist with the storage & disposal of hazardous materials according to department guidelines. 10. Prepare reagents/solutions for lab activities.
11. Prepare microbial growth media using aseptic techniques.
12. Clean glassware including sterilization as appropriate.
13. Assist with the care of live organisms maintained by the department including plants & microbial cultures.
14. Other duties as assigned by the lab coordinator
Other Duties and Responsibilities Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of at least one lab science course, with recommendation from lab instructor.
  • Ability to organize and perform a variety of tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Experience with word processing & spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word/Excel and/or Google Docs/Sheets)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Laboratory experience, including ability to operate sterilization equipment, dispose of contaminated wastes and maintain an inventory of supplies.
  • Completion of multiple lab science courses.
  • A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
