Job description

This position is for 8.00 hours, 182 days, plus 10 additional contract days per year (the incumbent shall consult with the school principal to schedule those 10 days). This position is compensated according to the Educator Salary Schedule (figures do not include pay for extra 10 days) and is eligible for benefits.

THIS POSITION WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR A MINIMUM OF 5 DAYS OR UNTIL FILLED Job Overview: Under the direction of the school principal, a junior high school counselor is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation processes necessary to sustain high-quality K-12 College and Career Readiness School Counseling Programs that benefit students, families, educators, and communities. Professional school counselors serve a crucial role in increasing student success. Through leadership, advocacy, and collaboration school counselors promote improved student learning and outcomes in academic, career, life, social, and emotional development for all students. School counselors utilize student-centered, data-driven results to coordinate comprehensive programs. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide individual counseling/guidance through direct services including:
  • An academic plan that aligns with placement data, grade level guidelines, high school graduation and college and career readiness requirements;
  • Knowledge of interests and abilities;
  • Plan for school success for current grade level and for the future;
  • College and career readiness goals;
  • Parent involvement in the college and career readiness planning process.
  • Plan and implement effective prevention and classroom instructional strategies, including ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College-, Career- and Life-Readiness Standards for Every Student and essential Tier 1 skills
  • Build staff understanding of school counseling role
  • Advocate for all students regardless of disability, economic status or background
  • Guide and counsel students through the development of their individual Plan for College and Career Readiness (PCCR)
  • Consult with teachers, staff, and parents to address diverse needs of students
  • Work collaboratively with school and community stakeholders to support student success and enhance student outcomes
  • Facilitate and implement interventions for students with critical needs, including short-term counseling in small-group and individual settings
  • Identify gaps in opportunity, achievement, attendance, behavior, and resources
  • Provide responsive services to students (and families) in crisis
  • Have knowledge and understanding of implementation of the Utah College and Career Readiness Program Model
  • Knowledge of school, district and community resources and programs
  • Effectively and equitably disseminate information to students, parents, and school staff
  • Demonstrate professional ethics as outlined by the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.
  • Conform to district policies including attendance, absences and evaluations.
  • Attendance is an Essential Function of this Position: Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
    Qualifications: Experience/Education:
      • Masters Degree in School Counseling
      • Utah State Board of Education School Counseling Professional license
      • College and Career Readiness (CCR) Certificate required
      • Experience in a school setting preferred
    Physical Demands:
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, converse clearly, and actively listen to students and staff.
    • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk around classrooms and school grounds, and reach with hands and arms.
    • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds, such as educational materials or office supplies.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this role include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
    Working Environment
    • The work environment is typical of a public elementary school and office setting.
    • The noise level is usually moderate but can occasionally escalate in classrooms, cafeterias, or hallways.
    • The employee may be exposed to high-stress situations and must be equipped to interact effectively with emotionally dysregulated students, staff, and parents in crisis.
    • Occasional local travel between district facilities or community resource locations may be required.
