Job description

Otter Valley Union Middle and High School is seeking a Library assistant/media specialist. This person will assist students and staff with library/media research and materials. Applicants should be innovative, dynamic, and energetic. The person will work 180 days/year, 7.5 hours/day. The daily and yearly schedule will be coordinated with the Principal to reflect library and building needs. JOB SUMMARY: Works under the general direction of the Librarian. Assists students and teachers in accessing library materials such as books, audio/video materials, online databases, and equipment such as chromebooks, speakers, DVD drives, and cameras. Compiles bibliographic and circulation records, sorts and shelves books and materials; updates library signage and displays, checks materials in/out, repairs damaged materials, and assists with reference and reader's advisory questions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assists patrons with book and library material check-in and out processes and interlibrary loan requests. Provides technical assistance to students and staff or refers forwards escalated or advanced issues to the librarian. Maintains and/or prepares circulation records, files, reports and overdue notices. Catalogs and indexes bibliographic records for new books and materials Assists in maintaining inventories: catalogs holdings, compiles lost book and replacement information, and processes acquisitions and orders. Processes new books and materials: Covers, repairs, and shelves books and other materials. Develops and disseminates a monthly newsletter; maintains social media presence on the school's Facebook account in consultation with the Principal, Athletic Director, and Librarian Updates catalog with reservations, account information, booklists, and resources Updates circulation system to include compiling lists of new/deleted students on regular basis Assists librarian with compiling materials for units, and recommending resources for research Maintains schedule of library events/classes as well as schedule for use of AV equipment Supervises library during librarian's absence Covers classes when substitute teachers are not available as assigned by the Principal Assist in maintaining the general appearance of the library Ensure equal access for all students to the entire collection, maintain the confidentiality of records, and respect copyright law. Assists IT in chromebook disbursements and exchanges when necessary Works collaboratively with others and remains flexible in performing assigned work; create a welcoming learning environment through interactions with patrons Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with library organization, children's literature, computerized catalog systems, and technology, as well as customer service is preferred.
