Job description

POSITION TITLE: School Maintenance Electrician I REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director BEGINNING DATE: Open Until Filled

NATURE OF WORK:

Employee will perform several duties in the maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures.  Work includes the independent performance of less technical tasks of the electrical trade for which detailed instructions are available.  Simple problems are resolved by the employee with more complex problems referred to supervisor.  Errors in work could cause serious consequences, such as loss of human life and facilities Work is reviewed to determine that assigned tasks are completed satisfactorily. This employee receives direct supervision.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Some knowledge of the practices and methods of the electrical trade
  • Skill and ability to use and care for tools and equipment of the electrical trade. 

  • Ability to understand and work from blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, sketches or pencil drawings
  • Ability to follow oral or written instructions
  • Must be capable of and willing to climb ladders and work on scaffold or lifts.

  • Must be willing to work weekends or afternoons when necessary

  • Must be drug and alcohol free and will be periodically tested for drugs and alcohol

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • An electrician's license based on State requirements as directed by the North Carolina Board of Electrical Examiners preferred, but not required

  • Considerable experience in performing most of the tasks associated with electrical work
  • Must have a minimum of three(3) years' experience in commercial wiring in the electrical trade

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to lift moderate to heavy weigh (80-100 pounds), stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, climb ladders and work on scaffolding, for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds routinely and 100 pounds occasionally
  • Must have and maintain a driving record that qualifies for school system insurance coverage.
  • Must have a valid NC driver's license and provide own transportation to and from work.

  • Must be able to drive to a variety of school sites.

  • Must be able to obtain CDL (Commercial Divers License) permit within 6 months of employment and CDL License within 1 year of employment

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  12 months

SALARY:  Salary Grade 59

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Furnishes own hand tools.

  2. Makes needed repairs to electrical systems and associated equipment.

  3. Examples of work include but are not limited to: Installs fixtures, outlets and switches and makes wire connections, measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles and installs conduit, replaces defective wiring and makes connections to electrical installations being renovated, makes minor repairs to appliance and equipment, replaces faulty electrical components, etc...

  4. Performs duties indoor and outdoor during normal/extreme weather conditions.

  5. Must be able to distinguish primary and secondary colors.
  6. Adheres to mandated uniform procedures.
  7.    Performs other duties as specified by the Maintenance Director or his designee.
