Job description

Communications Coordinator
The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross (SCHC)

About SCHC

The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross is a not-for-profit organization rooted in the Episcopal Church. Since 1884, SCHC has welcomed women called to a life of prayer, thanksgiving, simplicity, and advocacy for social justice and peace. Today, nearly 700 Companions gather across 32 chapters in the U.S. and India, along with a vibrant virtual chapter connecting members who live outside a chapter's geographic reach.

About the Role

SCHC is seeking a creative, organized, and mission-driven Communications Coordinator to lead the day-to-day execution of the Society's communications strategy. Working closely with the General Manager, the Companion-in-Charge, and the Communications Committee Chairwoman, this role owns everything from website content and social media to publication design, event promotion, and community outreach. You'll be the driving force behind how SCHC tells its story - both to its members and to the wider world.

This is an ideal opportunity for a communications professional who thrives in a collaborative, volunteer-driven environment and wants their work to have real spiritual and social impact.

What You'll Do

Communications & Publications

  • Help implement SCHC's Annual Communication Plan alongside the Communications Chairwoman
  • Serve as staff support to the Communications Committee, reporting on initiatives and progress
  • Edit, design, and distribute monthly and annual publications, newsletters, and mailings
  • Ensure all print and digital materials align with SCHC's brand and messaging

Design

  • Create collateral including flyers, banners, brochures, event signage, invitations, appeals, and holiday cards
  • Lead design and development of the SCHC Annual Report
  • Partner with outside vendors on branded materials like business cards and letterhead

Events

  • Plan and execute promotional campaigns for member programs and regional conferences
  • Develop pre-event announcements, follow-up communications, and post-event recaps
  • Build and distribute post-event surveys, then share insights with leadership

Community Outreach

  • Equip Companions with tools to promote SCHC in their own churches and communities
  • Support paid media placements in relevant religious publications
  • Identify inactive Companions and help craft re-engagement communications

Website & Social Media

  • Maintain and regularly update content on member and public SCHC websites, including monthly blogs
  • Grow SCHC's presence on Facebook and Instagram; monitor and respond to engagement
  • Track and report on digital communication performance, identifying opportunities to improve
  • Coordinate video and blog content featuring Companion stories and chapter happenings

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in digital and print communications
  • Prior experience in a nonprofit and/or volunteer-driven organization
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofing skills across newsletters, web content, and donor/member correspondence
  • Excellent graphic design skills and proficiency with WordPress, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office 365, and Google Drive (Blackbaud or similar CRM experience a plus)
  • Hands-on social media management experience (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
  • A collaborative, relationship-building style - equally comfortable leading a project independently or partnering with volunteers and committees
  • Strong project management instincts and an eye for creative problem-solving

SCHC is committed to diversity and inclusion and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or veteran status.
