Missoula Children's Theatre is hiring for a full time Technical Director to join our team.

Job Summary

This position ensures that all scenic and lighting elements for productions are built, painted, loaded in, and function appropriately for each production. They supervise and work with team members to safely produce scenery for all productions and rentals, while maintaining production value standards and adhering to deadlines and budgets as set by production manager and artistic director.

Essential responsibilities of the position

  • Train and supervise scene shop staff, volunteers and work study students to complete scenic elements for 5 community season shows, four educational shows and all tour shows, plus other projects as determined by the Artistic Director.
  • Design scenery for childrens and junior productions assigned.
  • Oversee equipment purchasing, track and manage inventory, and ensure supplies are stocked and replenished.
  • Ensure the stage, scene shop, and production storage areas are clean, organized, and well maintained.
  • Ensure all staff and volunteers are always working in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Produce working drawings for set builds and communicate build instructions to carpenters.
  • Determine supplies list and whether the build can be accomplished within time and budget constraints.
  • Work with designers to find creative solutions that fit within time and budget constraints.
  • Participate in all facets of the build.
  • Ensure strict adherence to schedules, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Complete load-in and strikes.
  • Maintain scene shop equipment.
  • Attend technical and dress rehearsals as needed to ensure production standards and scenic functionality.
  • Train crew volunteers on operation and mechanics of all elements of a show.
  • Train Stage Manager on the needs for each show.
  • Coordinate with and assist the Master Electrician in hanging and focusing stage lighting

Non-essential responsibilities of the position

  • Ensure floorplans get taped out in rehearsal spaces as requested by Director and/or Production Manager.
  • Ensure rehearsal furniture and props are provided as requested by Director, Stage Manager and/or Production Manager.
  • Oversee technical aspects during tour training and tour check-in.
  • Oversee the production of tour equipment as needed.
  • Design additional scenery and lighting as agreed.
  • Be available during run of all productions to deal with any issues.
  • Attend weekly meetings to communicate production related information to other departments.
  • Attend production meetings for all shows.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of scenic design and construction
  • Scenic painting experience
  • Ability to safely operate wood and metal working tools.
  • Drafting skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in scenic design or related field
  • Demonstrated management experience.
  • Properties and set dressing skills.
  • Knowledge of lighting and sound systems

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, squat, and crawl, for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to operate power tools for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to drive company vehicle

Work Environment

  • This position operates in a dynamic work environment with shifting priorities and time-sensitive responsibilities.
  • This position may require managing multiple tasks simultaneously and responding to changing needs or unexpected issues.
  • Work periods may include evenings, weekends, extended hours, and situations that can be stressful at times, particularly during peak operational periods.


Equipment Used

  • Wood working tools including but not limited to; table saw, compound miter saw, band saw, circular saw, jig saw, pneumatic staplers, battery operated drill, drill press, orbital sander, stationary sander, planer, Sawzall.
  • Metal working tools including but not limited to MIG welder, stationary grinder, angle grinder, portable band saw.
  • Hand tools such as hammer, pry bar, chisel, screwdriver, ratchet and socket, hand planer, various hand saws
  • Scissor lift, ladders, Vortek fly system, Company truck
  • Computer, printer, copy machine
