Job description

Job Description: The Supervisor position requires 5 years of experience as a supervisor in repair and maintenance efforts onboard U.S. Navy ships in the Trade Skill they are supervising and On-Site Supervisors must reflect the same (3 years) experience, training, and qualifications, as the Tradesperson they are supervising. These periods of experience cannot overlap.
Required Skills and Experiences: Supervisors shall possess 5 years experience supervising the following requirements:
Rigger Typical Trade Task
a. Plan, lay out, assemble, repair and install complex weight handling gear and various standing and running rigging.
c. Select and attach hoisting gear from a crane hook to ships or shipyard equipment, and pulling gear for lifting, moving and positioning heavy loads precisely.
d. Position and secure loads on trucks, trailers or railcars so they may be transported safely.
e. Work as part of a crane team and direct cranes and similar equipment to move items in and out of dry docks, ships or buildings.
f. Estimate sizes and weights of items to be lifted, considering factors such shape and location when using chain falls and crane hooks to move atypical items/components.
g. Assist in docking and undocking evolutions by positioning and handling lines and tackle gear, if necessary.
h. Manufacture and splice various wire and fiber rope items in the rigging loft.
i. Perform weight handling tests on rigging gear, cranes and shop rigging equipment.
Rigger Trade Skill Requirements
a. Rigger Supervisor must have at least 3 years of rigging experience in a heavy industrial work environment such as ship building or outfitting or commercial building construction.
b. Rigger Supervisor shall have sufficient knowledge of the common and most typical operations of rigging on U.S. Naval Surface Ship and Submarine platforms.
c. Rigger Supervisor shall be proficient with the installation, removal, and repositioning of machinery, structural members of ships or buildings, heavy equipment or other loads.
d. Rigger Supervisor shall be proficient at maneuvering loads, bracing, cushioning, preparing, and attaching lifting gear; and installing, beam clamps, and other supporting structures.
e. Rigger Supervisor shall be proficient at estimating weights and center of gravity of loads to be moved; this process involves planning weight distribution, maneuvering the load and attaching the appropriate lifting gear which includes, but is not limited to; chain falls, shackles, chain hoists, synthetic slings, 2" flat nylon strap in single, double or triple ply, beam clamps and wire rope.
f. Rigger Supervisor shall be proficient using complex multipoint suspension techniques to maneuver loads and move objects in confined areas.
g. Rigger Supervisor shall have a thorough understanding of rigging practices, and safety factors of rigging equipment.
h. Rigger Supervisor shall be proficient predicting and controlling the movements of various heavy or large pieces of equipment through narrow passages.
i. Rigger Supervisor shall be qualified to wear safety harnesses and work from scaffolds/platforms where drop off will be greater than 5 feet IAW 29 CFR 1915 (Subpart I)
