What is the difference between Scada Architect vs Control Systems Engineer?

AspectScada ArchitectControl Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in SCADA systemsBachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Engineering, certifications in PLC/SCADA
Work EnvironmentDesigning and planning SCADA systems, collaborating with engineersDeveloping, testing, and maintaining control systems, fieldwork
Industry UsageUsed in infrastructure, manufacturing, energy sectors for system designApplied in automation, manufacturing, process control industries

While both roles involve automation and control systems, a Scada Architect primarily focuses on designing and planning SCADA architectures, whereas a Control Systems Engineer implements and maintains these systems in operational environments. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus.

How does a SCADA Architect typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the design and implementation phases?

A SCADA Architect works closely with cross-functional teams including engineers, IT specialists, and operations personnel throughout the design and implementation phases. They facilitate communication between stakeholders to ensure system requirements are accurately captured and addressed. This collaboration often involves leading design workshops, reviewing integration points, and coordinating system testing to align SCADA solutions with operational goals. Effective teamwork helps ensure that the SCADA system is robust, scalable, and meets both technical and business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SCADA Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SCADA Architect, you need expertise in industrial automation, control systems engineering, and a solid understanding of networking and cybersecurity principles, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with SCADA platforms (such as Wonderware, GE, or Siemens), PLC programming, and industry certifications like ISA or CompTIA Security+ is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage complex integration projects. These skills are crucial for designing secure, reliable, and efficient SCADA systems that support critical industrial operations.

What does a SCADA Architect do?

A SCADA Architect is responsible for designing and implementing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that monitor and control industrial processes. They develop the overall system architecture, select appropriate hardware and software components, and ensure integration with existing IT and OT infrastructure. SCADA Architects also focus on system reliability, security, and scalability, often working closely with engineering and cybersecurity teams. Their work is crucial in industries such as energy, water treatment, manufacturing, and utilities.

Job Description: MES/SCADA Architect

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems help monitor and control operations and industrial processes within an integrated IT architecture.  This role will be hands-on in designing, configuring, deploying, maintaining, and improving these systems in a fast-paced, dynamic Discrete Manufacturing environment.  You will collaborate with architects, analysts, and business associates to create a five-year roadmap and set standards for a scalable SCADA solution that supports IT integration, aligning with corporate goals and addressing both current and future needs of the five manufacturing facilities at International.  This position requires knowledge of SCADA principles, strong communication skills, the ability to effectively articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, and a passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Define a five-year roadmap and strategy to ensure a robust, scalable MES/SCADA solution for long-term IT integration, aligning with corporate goals to meet current and future plant needs at the six (6) manufacturing facilities
  • Set enterprise MES/SCADA architecture and governance standards and create processes to ensure adherence, including forming a community of practice with clear roles and a review committee
  • Develop solutions to ensure efficient and reliable operation of MES/SCADA systems while minimizing ownership costs and considering all interconnections, such as plant controllers, network switches, firewalls, annunciators, HMIs, and IT systems/equipment
  • Coordinate technical discussions and vendor negotiations
  • Keep abreast of key Manufacturing IT trends - Industrial IoT, Manufacturing Digital Plant Maturity, Cybersecurity, Data Integrity principles, technology, and data standardization, etc.
  • Utilize balanced judgment in decisions about risks of both actions taken and not taken while seeking ways to iterate faster in a well-managed way for the immediate team
  • Define, implement, follow, refine, explain, and enforce policies for installing, maintaining, and updating manufacturing process control systems, including IT integration
  • Maintain a keen awareness of the cross-functional tones throughout the company and continually offer innovative solutions that align with organizational goals to meet current and future plant needs
  • Solve complex business problems often within unfamiliar territory and without precedent
  • Perform program reviews and system analysis to ensure functionality, stability, scalability, and security
  • Assess systems for efficiency and recommend improvements to ensure adherence to industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols, such as NIST, ISA-95, and IEC 62443
  • Work with stakeholders to create cost-effective, timely proposals, including alternatives and prototypes to validate solutions before full-scale investment or implementation
  • Pro-actively engage with project partners including automation engineers, process engineers, and IT professionals to perform technical due diligence, meeting milestones to ensure timely and budget-friendly completion
  • Guide the implementation of solutions, including network configurations and software integrations
  • Coordinate networking equipment configuration with corporate network engineering team, including specifying physical interfaces and protocols, assigning IP addresses, and administration of firewall rules
  • Use standard project management practices: submit timely budget forecasts, accurately account for product costs, create compliant work plans, maintain issues lists and risk logs, and use planning tools to track schedules, update stakeholders, and meet deadlines
  • Create, organize, and maintain all as-built documents and deliverables, such as MES/SCADA system configurations, schematics, network diagrams, operational procedures, contextual designs, integrated system diagrams, data flow diagrams, and programming settings
  • Provide training to users of solution on operation and maintenance
  • Engage in ongoing maintenance activities, including emergency procedures, troubleshooting playbooks, system backups, and upgrade plans
  • Collaborate with project partners to incorporate lessons learned into new designs
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry technology through various training sessions and conferences
  • Accomplish work through independent contributions or teamwork requiring advanced subject area knowledge and decision-making skills
  • Coordinate dependencies with other team functions and establishes and maintains strategic partnerships across various teams
