What is the difference between Scada Architect vs Control Systems Engineer?

AspectScada ArchitectControl Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in SCADA systemsBachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Engineering, certifications in PLC/SCADA
Work EnvironmentDesigning and planning SCADA systems, collaborating with engineersDeveloping, testing, and maintaining control systems, fieldwork
Industry UsageUsed in infrastructure, manufacturing, energy sectors for system designApplied in automation, manufacturing, process control industries

While both roles involve automation and control systems, a Scada Architect primarily focuses on designing and planning SCADA architectures, whereas a Control Systems Engineer implements and maintains these systems in operational environments. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus.

How does a SCADA Architect typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the design and implementation phases?

A SCADA Architect works closely with cross-functional teams including engineers, IT specialists, and operations personnel throughout the design and implementation phases. They facilitate communication between stakeholders to ensure system requirements are accurately captured and addressed. This collaboration often involves leading design workshops, reviewing integration points, and coordinating system testing to align SCADA solutions with operational goals. Effective teamwork helps ensure that the SCADA system is robust, scalable, and meets both technical and business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SCADA Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SCADA Architect, you need expertise in industrial automation, control systems engineering, and a solid understanding of networking and cybersecurity principles, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with SCADA platforms (such as Wonderware, GE, or Siemens), PLC programming, and industry certifications like ISA or CompTIA Security+ is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage complex integration projects. These skills are crucial for designing secure, reliable, and efficient SCADA systems that support critical industrial operations.

What does a SCADA Architect do?

A SCADA Architect is responsible for designing and implementing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that monitor and control industrial processes. They develop the overall system architecture, select appropriate hardware and software components, and ensure integration with existing IT and OT infrastructure. SCADA Architects also focus on system reliability, security, and scalability, often working closely with engineering and cybersecurity teams. Their work is crucial in industries such as energy, water treatment, manufacturing, and utilities.

SCADA Networking and Telecom Engineer

Intersect

Charleston, WV • Remote

Full-time

Posted 11 hours ago

Job description

We’re a team of friends bound together by a mission to preserve our planet for future generations through innovative energy solutions and modern infrastructure. Intersect develops, constructs, and operates the most ambitious power and data center infrastructure in the country by co-locating industrial demand with dedicated gas and renewable power generation.

Intersect was acquired by Google in March 2026 and operates as an independent subsidiary. We are developing and constructing multiple gigawatts of energy and data center projects in the U.S., enabling more data center and generation capacity to come online faster. We’re on an aggressive growth trajectory and looking for people hungry to tackle the largest energy challenges on the planet.

Location & Team Gatherings

Intersect has been a fully flexible workplace since its founding in 2016.  We’ve been very intentional about the way we do things. We are not work-from-home, hybrid, or in-office - we are any and all of those options! Deepening social connections and offering shared experiences is a cornerstone of the way we work. We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.

We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed hubs to foster more in-person connections while maintaining our flexible remote culture.

About This Position

As part of Intersect’s Engineering team, you’ll design and secure the communications backbone that enables utility-scale clean energy facilities to operate safely, reliably, and in full compliance within ERCOT. This role is central to delivering standardized, scalable SCADA networking architecture across solar, wind, and BESS projects while ensuring seamless integration with ISO and owner platforms.

You’ll lead complex telemetry and control system integration efforts—from design through commissioning—while strengthening cybersecurity controls aligned with NERC CIP and internal standards. Your expertise will directly influence fleet-wide standards, long-term infrastructure reliability, and operational excellence across Intersect’s growing portfolio.

This role is planned to start in mid-Q1, with a four-week training period to reach full productivity by mid-Q2.

Team Overview

This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect’s mission to accelerate the renewable energy transition by designing, building, and optimizing high-performing clean energy assets at scale. The Engineering team partners cross-functionally with Development, Construction, Asset Management, and Operations to deliver projects that are technically sound, secure, and built for long-term reliability.

Joining this team means contributing to infrastructure that supports grid stability, strengthens communities, and enables a more sustainable energy future—while growing alongside talented, collaborative experts committed to technical excellence.

What You’ll Do

Design and Own SCADA Network Architecture

  • Develop and standardize secure, scalable SCADA network architectures for utility-scale facilities operating within ERCOT.

  • Define industrial networking strategies including routing, switching, VLAN segmentation, fiber topology, and firewall design.

  • Establish documentation and configuration control standards to support fleet-wide consistency and long-term maintainability.

Strengthen Cybersecurity & Compliance

  • Implement and maintain SCADA cybersecurity controls aligned with NERC CIP and company standards.

  • Configure firewalls, ACLs, and VPN/IPsec tunnels to protect critical infrastructure communications.

  • Partner with stakeholders to ensure compliant telemetry, ISO communications, and secure data acquisition systems.

Lead System Integration & Commissioning

  • Oversee FAT, SAT, commissioning, and field support for telemetry and control systems.

  • Integrate inverters, BESS, meters, relays, PPCs, RTACs, and ERCOT interfaces into cohesive systems.

  • Coordinate with EPCs, vendors, and owner platforms to ensure seamless system functionality.

Troubleshoot & Optimize Plant Communications

  • Diagnose and resolve complex industrial communications and control system issues.

  • Support ERCOT nodal protocol implementation and telemetry requirements.

  • Drive improvements in plant networking standards and operational reliability.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.

  • 5+ years of SCADA networking and telecommunications experience in utility-scale energy projects.

  • Direct experience supporting SCADA communications for large-scale solar, wind, or BESS facilities.

  • Experience supporting ERCOT telemetry and control integration.

  • Strong knowledge of NERC CIP cybersecurity requirements and compliance practices.

  • Expertise in industrial networking, SCADA architecture, firewall configuration, and VPN/IPsec management.

  • Experience leading FAT, SAT, commissioning, and troubleshooting for control systems.

  • Deep understanding of plant operations, grid interconnection, protection systems, and ERCOT standards.

  • Established relationships with vendors, EPCs, and telecommunications providers.

  • A structured, detail-oriented approach with strong problem-solving skills.

  • A calm, solutions-oriented mindset in high-impact environments.

  • Commitment to technical excellence, secure system design, and alignment with Intersect’s core values.
