Field Laborer

Subsurface Construction Company is a leading design-build geotechnical specialty contractor with offices located in Raleigh, NC and Greenville, SC. Specializing in the Southeast region, we devise and implement solutions for excavation support and protection, and geotechnical construction including shoring and underpinning; earth retention including soil nail walls, soldier pile walls and sheet pile walls, ground anchors, rock bolts, and aggregate piers; and deep foundations including micro piles. Since 1995, Subsurface has served as a dedicated partner to civil and geotechnical engineers, general contractors and owners for excavation support and deep foundations. We understand that successful projects and enduring relationships are built on a foundation of honesty and trust.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adheres to company and customer safety policies and practices.
  • Installs steel reinforcing materials for concrete construction.
  • Moves soil materials with hand tools and equipment when trained.
  • Sets up grouting and concrete operation (equipment, plumbing, staging materials, etc).
  • Supports concrete installation process by; setting up hoses from concrete pump to work area, provides finishing work, working of concrete with tools, and clean up.
  • Supports and batches cement grout with cement mixer.
  • Installs grout within drilled holes by using pipes plumbed from grout mixer.
  • Installs steel beams and concrete in drilled shafts.
  • Installs lumber against soil for retaining wall face.
  • Supports drilling operations by maneuvering drill tooling, operating compressors, moving hoses, and maintaining water supply.
  • Installs ground anchors by inserting rebar in drilled/driven holes.
  • Uses hand tools to install wall facings.
  • Performs concrete demolition work using saws, chipping hammers, and hand tools.
  • Installs steel brackets to concrete using hand tools.
  • Load and unload materials onto truck using forklifts when trained.
  • Operate, clean and maintain equipment when trained.
  • Safeguards company equipment, tools and vehicles.
  • Ensure timely and regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of employment.

Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License without restriction, required.
  • Must pass (with results acceptable to Subsurface) applicable background check.
  • Must pass Worksteps Evaluation.
  • Must have driving records within company standards.
  • Ability to read and understand basic instructions, including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Willing and able to perform physically strenuous work in all weather conditions.
  • OSHA 10 ETD, preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR, preferred.
  • Mechanical skills with small engine, hydraulic, etc., preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk and carry loads up to 100 pounds on uneven and sloping surfaces.
  • Work outside in extreme heat and cold weather conditions.
  • Walk, stand and climb 4 to 6 hours per day.
  • Twist and or reach to complete daily activities.
  • Regularly required to use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls with proper PPE.
  • Communicate verbally (both speaking and hearing) in potentially noisy environments.
  • Must speak and understand English at a level appropriate to receive and comprehend specialized safety and training instructions in potentially noisy environments.
  • Work in remote, difficult to access locations.
  • Full time travel.
  • Must be able to work up to 12 hour days; 7 days per week, if necessary.
