What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Satellite RF Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Satellite RF Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, with expertise in radio frequency (RF) theory, satellite communications, and often a relevant degree. Familiarity with RF simulation software (like CST or HFSS), spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and industry certifications such as FCC licensing are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork enhance success in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure reliable satellite communication systems and efficient troubleshooting in a highly technical, mission-critical environment.

What are Satellite RF Engineers?

Satellite RF Engineers are specialists who design, develop, test, and maintain radio frequency (RF) systems used in satellite communications. They are responsible for ensuring reliable transmission and reception of signals between satellites and ground stations, often working with antennas, transmitters, receivers, and other RF components. Their expertise is crucial for enabling services such as satellite TV, internet, navigation, and remote sensing. Satellite RF Engineers also troubleshoot signal issues, optimize system performance, and comply with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges Satellite RF Engineers face when working on satellite communication systems?

Satellite RF Engineers often encounter challenges related to signal interference, atmospheric attenuation, and ensuring reliable communication links over long distances. Dealing with strict regulatory standards and coordinating frequency allocations is also part of the role. Additionally, troubleshooting hardware in remote or space-based environments can require creative solutions and close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as system integration and network operations.

Job description

Product Line Manager

Airbus DS Government Solutions, Inc. is seeking an experienced and strategic Product Line Manager to lead the definition, development, and lifecycle management of our satellite communications product portfolio. In this role, you will serve as the nexus between our engineering teams, customers, business development, and executive leadership—translating market needs and customer requirements into winning products and compelling roadmaps.

This is a high-visibility, cross-functional leadership role that requires deep technical fluency in satellite systems and the commercial acumen to drive profitable product lines from concept through fielding and sustainment. You'll have the opportunity to shape the future of satellite communications technology while working with industry-leading teams on mission-critical solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and maintain the multi-year product roadmap for assigned satellite communication product lines, including ground terminals, modem platforms, antenna systems, and network management software
  • Conduct market analysis, competitor benchmarking, and customer needs assessments to identify gaps and growth opportunities
  • Define product vision, positioning, and go-to-market strategy in coordination with Business Development and Sales
  • Prioritize roadmap investments based on ROI, strategic alignment, regulatory landscape, and customer demand signals
  • Author and maintain Product Requirements Documents (PRDs), system-level specifications, and interface control documents (ICDs)
  • Partner closely with systems engineering and software development teams to ensure technical feasibility and on-schedule delivery
  • Lead trade studies and design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) representing the product voice
  • Define acceptance criteria and oversee product validation and verification activities
  • Serve as the primary product owner in customer-facing discussions, capability demonstrations, and proposal activities
  • Collect and synthesize field feedback, operational lessons learned, and customer enhancement requests into actionable backlog items
  • Support business development in shaping opportunities by authoring white papers, capability briefs, and technical volumes
  • Represent the product line at industry conferences, trade shows (e.g., SATELLITE, MILCOM, AUSA), and government program reviews
  • Develop and track product line P&L, including revenue forecasts, cost targets, and margin goals
  • Coordinate with program managers to ensure feature delivery aligns with contract milestones and budget constraints
  • Manage make-vs-buy decisions and supplier engagement for key subsystems
  • Establish and monitor KPIs for product performance, customer satisfaction, and market share
  • Manage full product lifecycle from concept to end-of-life, including obsolescence management and technology refresh planning
  • Develop and maintain product documentation: user manuals, installation guides, training materials, and release notes
  • Coordinate software release management, firmware versioning, and field upgrade processes with engineering and logistics
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline
  • 7+ years of experience in product management, systems engineering, or program management within the satellite communications, defense electronics, or aerospace industry
  • Demonstrated knowledge of satellite communication architectures, including GEO, MEO, and LEO systems, RF link budgets, waveform standards (DVB-S2X, STANAG, etc.), and ground segment design
  • Experience with government and DoD acquisition processes, including FAR/DFARS, ITAR compliance, and export control regulations
  • Proven ability to write clear technical specifications, requirements documents, and customer-facing product literature
  • Strong executive communication skills—ability to present to C-suite, government program offices, and technical audiences
  • Active U.S. Secret security clearance, or ability to obtain one
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business (MBA), or related field
  • Experience with electronically scanned arrays (ESA/AESA), flat-panel antenna systems, or multi-band SATCOM terminals
  • Familiarity with RCTA/ARINC standards, MIL-STD-461/810, and JITC certification processes
  • Proficiency with product lifecycle management (PLM) tools such as Jira, Confluence, or equivalent
  • Experience supporting SBIR/STTR programs or Other Transaction Authority (OTA) contract vehicles
  • Knowledge of software-defined networking, cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, CMMC), and cloud-based ground systems
  • PMP, PMI-ACP, or Pragmatic Institute (AIPMM) certification
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Opportunities for training and professional certifications
  • Exposure to cutting-edge satellite communication technologies
  • A collaborative environment where your expertise has a direct impact on mission success
