What this job involves:

This is an exciting opportunity to implement your diverse data center facility maintenance and operations leadership experiences enhancing a world class facility team in support of a well-established yet fast growing financial services company.


This position reports to the Data Center Facility Operations Manager and will closely collaborate with client's Data Center Facility Management team. The Data Center Chief Engineer will lead a 24x7 team of operating engineers.


It is expected that the Chief Engineer consistently demonstrates their Mission Critical Experience, Leadership, Disposition, and Accountability gained throughout their professional career.


Responsibilities include:

  • Continuous assessment of facility infrastructure and processes with the ultimate goal of avoiding unplanned outages.
  • Rigorous adherence to a Critical Environment Management program.
  • Ensuring all compliance documentation is maintained.
  • Maintain effective professional relationships with other teams including IT Hardware Planning, Security, Janitorial, Mail Services, Energy Management, client Property Management, and client Project Management teams.
  • Recruiting technical staff that have sufficient skills and experience to support the critical facility.
  • Effectively use staff by assigning responsibilities best suited to their capabilities
  • Consistently seek opportunities to develop staff through training, stretch assignments, mentoring, shadowing other staff, etc.
  • Ensure incidents are escalated effectively
  • Be accountable for assigned KPIs and other service targets.
  • Coordinates, reviews, and approves construction and maintenance work orders
  • Creates and maintains annual PM schedule and adjusts as necessary to adapt to events out of the team's control
  • Ensures that third party vendors are scheduled, work orders are accurate, and well documented
  • Support creation of annual OPEX budgets and strive to operate the facility within the budget, including the timing of budgeted OPEX spend.
  • Contribute to CAPEX planning by identifying significant non-annual spend items needed in the next five years.
  • Contribute to quality reviews of procedures for content, clarity, and accuracy.
  • Responsible for general condition of the facility such as cleanliness, organization of tool rooms, technical part storage, spare part inventories, etc.
  • Continuous focus on safe work conditions, safety procedures, proper use of PPE, and safety training.

Minimum Requirements, Experience, and Competencies:

  • 15+ years of relevant work experience in critical Data Centers
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in a senior supervisory role within a critical Data Center
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in applicable engineering field or mechanical field desirable
  • Knowing what "success" looks like. The successful candidate will have a complete picture of how a data center should operate based on their experience and work toward implementing that ideal system.
  • Proficient in electrical systems fundamentals, UPS Systems, generators, electrical switchgear
  • Proficient in Mechanical systems fundamentals, chillers systems, building automation and control systems
  • Proficient in raised floor critical operating environments and associated procedures and best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate well in both oral and written reports
  • Must be proficient in basic computer applications and software including MS Office, Corrigo, Salesforce, Remedy
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings and technical manuals
