What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAP Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SAP Consultant, you need expertise in SAP modules (such as FI/CO, MM, or SD), business process knowledge, and often a relevant degree in IT or business. Familiarity with SAP software platforms, ERP systems, and certifications like SAP Certified Application Associate are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help consultants effectively support clients and collaborate with teams. These competencies ensure successful SAP implementations, user adoption, and alignment of technology with business goals.

Professionals at the SAP Center often work in a fast-paced environment, especially during events or large gatherings, which can involve irregular hours and high customer interaction. New hires may face challenges such as adapting to shifting schedules, handling large crowds, and maintaining excellent customer service under pressure. To prepare, it’s important to develop strong communication skills, learn efficient time management, and be ready to collaborate closely with diverse teams across operations, guest services, and security. Embracing flexibility and being proactive in problem-solving will help new team members succeed in this dynamic setting.

What is a SAP Center?

A SAP Center typically refers to a dedicated facility or team within an organization that specializes in the implementation, management, and support of SAP software solutions. SAP Centers are responsible for ensuring that the company’s SAP systems run efficiently, providing technical support, training users, and facilitating upgrades or integrations. These centers can be internal departments or external service providers and often serve as the main point of contact for all SAP-related needs within the business.

Job description

Title: SAP Center of Excellence (CoE) Manager

Location: Phoenix, AZ

Type: Full-Time Permanent

Compensation: $170k-190k

We are seeking an experienced SAP Center of Excellence (CoE) Manager to lead and evolve a high-performing SAP organization within a complex enterprise environment. This is a senior leadership role for someone who brings deep SAP delivery credibility and can remain close to the technical work, not removed from it.

This is not a purely governance or people-management position. The right leader will be hands-on when needed, able to engage directly with senior SAP engineers, and capable of guiding SAP strategy and execution across multiple business cycles.

Your role:

·     Lead and grow the SAP Center of Excellence, providing direction, standards, and priorities across SAP delivery and support

·     Serve as a technical and functional escalation point for complex SAP challenges, design decisions, and delivery execution

·     Partner with business and IT stakeholders to ensure SAP solutions align with enterprise goals and operational realities

·     Guide a strong existing SAP technical team through mentorship, coaching, and career development

·     Drive successful execution across full SAP program lifecycles, including:

o Large-scale implementations

o Digital transformation initiatives

o Post-go-live stabilization and continuous improvement

·     Establish practical guardrails, architecture standards, and delivery discipline without over-engineering

·     Ensure SAP initiatives meet compliance expectations within a SOX-regulated environment

·     Collaborate effectively with global teams and provide leadership presence across international operations, including onsite engagement as needed

What you’ve got:

·     Significant SAP leadership experience within large, complex enterprise environments

·     Deep SAP credibility with the ability to participate in technical design conversations and challenge assumptions when necessary

·     Strong foundation in SAP functional and/or technical delivery (FICO highly preferred; additional modules a plus)

·     Proven track record leading teams to deliver major SAP programs successfully

·     Experience implementing enterprise systems in a SOX-controlled environment

·     Demonstrated ability to balance architecture, delivery, and business alignment

·     Operator mindset with a history of owning outcomes, not just phases or frameworks

·     Strong judgment and ability to diplomatically push back on misaligned priorities or “bad ideas”

Preferred Profile

The ideal candidate is a long-tenured SAP leader who came up through real delivery work rather than governance alone. This person has “scar tissue” from running SAP at scale, understands what works in practice, and knows how to lead a CoE without ivory-tower syndrome.

We value leaders who are:

·     Low ego, high trust

·     Confident and steady under pressure

·     Comfortable working across cultures and global teams

·     Willing to travel to operational facilities and build credibility through listening and presence
