SJS Industrial, a wet paint, powder coating, ceramic coating and media blasting facility for the maritime industry in and around Virginia Beach, Virginia, is seeking a full-time permanent Sand/Media Blaster. The ideal candidate will be reliable, self-motivated, and detailed oriented. We have a day shift and night shift.

Saturday or evening shifts might happen occasionally if there is a special project with a tight deadline, but the goal is a steady and reliable Monday through Friday 40-hour workweek to avoid weekend, night-time and overtime work.

The pay for this position will range from $20/hr to $25/hr depending on level of experience and certifications. The position also comes with 7 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, 80/hrs accumulated PTO, and medical, dental, vision insurance.

The ideal person for this position will have three (3) or more years of recent career experience in commercial media blasting and preferably possess an SSPC Dry Abrasive Blaster Certification (C7). This Blaster will know from experience different type of nozzles and their usages within specific applications.

He or she will already know how to use an industrial blaster hood correctly to ensure personal safety, will be at ease with working with others within a fast-paced team environment without compromising quality, and will exhibit conscientious workmanship to ensure components meet military and maritime industry acceptance standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Keeping work area safe and clean, masking surfaces, identifying machined surfaces, maintaining blast equipment, sandblasting parts, following visual standards, blowing down blasted parts.
  • Must be able to understand and blast to industry standards.
  • Abrades surfaces of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt, and to impart specified finish, using abrasive-blasting equipment: Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or garnet of specified grade into machine hopper.
  • Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrading action.
  • Loads parts on pallets after completion.
  • Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle or into tumbling barrel.
  • Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasive-laden compressed air, gas, or liquid over surface of parts.
  • Manually directs nozzle over surface of large parts.
  • Examine finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Assist with shift/workday closeout activities and general housekeeping, which are duties that are shared with all other members of the team
  • Participate in cross-training to acquire additional complementary skills
  • Other production-related tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Production Supervisor or the SJS Industrial Director.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) or more years of recent experience in commercial/maritime media blasting
  • Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) Dry Abrasive Blaster Certification (C7)โ€”Please provide documentation or a certification number to demonstrate you possess this mandatory credential and your certification is current/valid โ€“ Not recommended but preferred.
  • Ability to understand and accurately interpret line drawings, specifications and details shown on work orders to be able to correctly apply the right type/brand, color and thickness of paint or coating
  • Knowledge of proper spraying techniques to execute even coverage without blotches, runs or other defects
  • Veteran hiring preference, but all applicants are welcome
  • This is a physical job requiring interaction with a work team in a noisy environment, so the ability to see and hear clearly, stand, walk, bend over and crouch during the majority of each work is a necessity; must be able to lift 30 or more pounds
  • Must be willing to wear Proper Protective Equipment (PPE) like a respirator at all times when working as required by occupational safety law
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test and background check.
