Description
The Samford University Department of Public Safety (SU-DPS) is a fully-functioning police agency which provides for 24/7/365 law enforcement services to the greater campus community. Sworn police officers are vital members of the agency in ensuring a safe and secure campus community. Police officers provide all types of law enforcement functions to include, but are not limited to the following: providing preventative policing patrol, responding to service calls for law-enforcement related assistance, filing incident/offense reports, performing investigations, providing positive campus engagement, and assisting other law enforcement agencies as needed.
Job Duties
  • Complete required reports (incidents/offense, accidents or any other reports as needed).
  • Respond to calls for service (provide jump starts & lock outs) or other significant incidents occurring on University property.
  • May be required to appear in an administrative or court hearings as deemed necessary.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations and prepare written reports as may be required.
  • Communicate effectively with the public during routine and unusual situations.
  • Assist the shift supervisor with monthly in-service training.
  • Perform or assist in the performance of risk assessments relating to departmental responsibilities by buildings and grounds for safety hazards.
  • Assist with University deposits and escorts, if necessary.
  • Maintain liaison with University officials, law enforcement and fire departments to promote the safety and security of the University.
  • Provide location directions to citizens as required.
  • Prepare court documents for hearings as necessary.
  • Prepare monthly activity reports.
  • Lock, unlock and secure buildings and facilities.
  • Provide preventative patrol, direct traffic, and setup and remove barricades/cones for special events and emergencies.
  • Secure main gate at night and check identity of all individuals entering the campus via the southwest gate.
  • Enforce parking regulations.
  • Report threatening weather conditions and assist in the notification of all campus personnel.
  • Serve as departmental dispatcher as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

This position involves considerable overtime and shift work.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be at least twenty-one years of age
  • Certified by the Alabama Peace Officer's Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) as a peace officer
  • Annually, must successfully qualify on the APOSTC firearms course
  • Must possess a current Alabama driver's license with the ability to drive an automobile, a pick-up truck and utility vehicles (i.e. MULE, E-ZGO, etc.)
  • May be required to pass approved fitness test; must be physically able to walk, stoop, run, climb several flights of stairs and climb a six foot wall or fence
  • Ability to successfully complete defensive tactics training to include handcuffing techniques, ASP Baton, Mace, arrest procedures and self-protection
  • Must be capable of speaking articulately to individuals and groups in English; must be able to read and comprehend English; to read and comprehend correspondence, manuals, journals, letters, memoranda, policies, directives and signs in English
  • Must have the ability to hear verbal communications and radio/electronic messages/signals
  • Have no felony convictions or convictions for crimes of moral turpitude
  • Have the ability to learn law enforcement and security terminology in order to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work different shifts and considerable overtime situations on short notice
  • Final candidate must successfully pass a drug screening test to be eligible for employment.
