Job description

Position Summary

The Salvation Army Grand Rapids Thrift Store provides an enjoyable shopping experience with great deals on a variety of goods. Revenue from the store directly supports the local community by funding Salvation Army Corps programs and services. The Salvation Army is committed to "Doing the Most Good" by offering holistic, person-centered support to individuals and families. In addition to worship services and pastoral care, the Corps provides short- and long-term case management, food and clothing assistance, utility and rent support, housing resources, and connections to community organizations.

The Store Manager oversees the daily store operations, including customer service, staff supervision, inventory management, and pricing. The Store Manager ensures a clean, organized store environment and creates a positive experience for donors and shoppers. The Store Manager maximizes in-kind donations and drives sales through effective merchandising and promotions.

Wage:$45,277 - $50,000 annually,the workweek is Tuesday to Saturday.

Essential Functions (approximate time spent)

  • Store Operations Management (40%): Manage all aspects of daily store operations, including opening and closing procedures, cash handling, staff supervision, and compliance with store policies and procedures.
  • Inventory & Merchandising (30%): Supervise the sorting, pricing, and display of donated goods to maintain optimal inventory levels and ensure merchandise is appealing and well-organized.
  • Customer Service (10%): Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by addressing customer inquiries and complaints and maintaining a friendly, welcoming atmosphere in the store.
  • Sales & Marketing (10%): Develop and implement effective merchandising strategies, promotions, and sales events to drive store revenue and attract new customers.
  • Facility Maintenance (5%): Ensure the building and property are well maintained; collaborate with supervisor on needed repairs and improvements.
  • Community & Donor Relations (5%): Build strong relationships with donors, local businesses, and community organizations to enhance store donations and promote The Salvation Army's mission and goals.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two or more years of store management experience.
  • Previous experience managing budgets and processing cash.
  • Must pass background checks, possess a valid driver's license, and meet MVR requirements.

Competencies

  • Flexible interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • High level of initiative and self-motivation.
  • Ability to problem-solve, multi-task, and prioritize.

Working Conditions

  • Perform all physical aspects of the position, including being mobile, bending, reaching, and climbing.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds regularly and occasionally 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with colleagues, customers, and the community.
  • On-site role; not eligible for a remote-friendly work environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise store staff and volunteers, providing ongoing support to foster a productive and positive work environment. Make employment recommendations.

Drive/Travel Requirements

  • Drive locally using an agency or personal vehicle to support the mission of The Salvation Army.
