Definition Definition: Under the supervision of the Nurse Practitioner primarily assigned to the Department of Corrections from HHS, provides nursing care to adult and juvenile detainees of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa (SRPMIC) Department of Corrections. Reports to the Clinic Nurse Manager or designee.
This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt. Examples of Tasks - Direct Care: Performs nursing assessments and screenings.
- Obtains and documents health histories.
- Initiates patient education efforts and preventative health measures within scope of practice for professional registered nurse.
- Carries out medical provider orders.
- Initiates appropriate interventions according to health care priorities identified in conjunction with primary care provider.
- Monitors detainee's conditions and reports to medical providers.
- Sets up and monitors medication administration.
- Monitors medications and determines efficacy of medications, side effects and drug interactions.
- Provides medication education to detainees.
- Provides health education and health skills training to Department of Corrections (DOC) staff.
- Assists with HHS employee health efforts including annual influenza vaccination clinic.
- Participates as a member of multi-disciplinary consultation and review teams including case assignments.
- Administration: Assures adherence to established policies, procedures and standing orders.
- Oversees care coordination for all adult and juvenile detainees including the coordination of all health related appointments and referrals.
- Coordinates health care aspect of detainee's transition to another facility, whether correctional, hospital, treatment center or other.
- Documents accurately, legibly and completely in patient charts. Includes subjective and objective data, treatment provided, evaluation of treatment effectiveness and patient education provided.
- Develops and documents nursing care plans and interdisciplinary treatment plans.
- Establishes and maintains documentation and communication flow between Health staff at DOC and DOC staff.
- Appraises quality and effectiveness of documentation, education materials and equipment periodically and makes recommendations for change when necessary.
- Follows through to ensure that agreed upon changes are implemented and maintained.
- Maintains program data.
- Prepares and submits required reports.
- Participates in case staffing as required.
- Miscellaneous: Performs other duties as assigned to maintain and enhance the health care program and Department of Health and Human Services service operation.
- Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in nursing through continuing education, staff meetings, training and conferences, etc.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:
- Active unrestricted AZ Registered Nurse license.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
- Experience working with Native American Communities preferred.
- Experience working in a corrections facility as a Registered Nurse preferred.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
Special Requirements- May be required to work beyond normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

- New hires in clinical roles must present valid BLS certification (Healthcare Provider BLS for clinicians) prior to the first day of patient care.
