What is sales engagement?

Sales engagement refers to the interactions and communications between sales representatives and potential customers throughout the sales process. It involves strategies and tools used to connect with leads, share information, and build relationships to move prospects through the sales funnel. Effective sales engagement helps increase response rates, improve customer experiences, and ultimately drive more sales. Technologies such as sales engagement platforms can automate and personalize outreach, track engagement metrics, and optimize sales activities. By focusing on meaningful engagement, teams can better understand customer needs and close deals more efficiently.

Sales Engagement focuses on executing outreach strategies to engage prospects, often using specialized tools and platforms. To thrive in Sales Engagement, you need a strong understanding of sales processes, lead generation, and client relationship management, often backed by a degree in business or marketing. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, sales automation tools, and analytics platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, active listening, and resilience are stand-out soft skills for building rapport and handling objections. These skills are crucial because they enable professionals to efficiently drive revenue growth, nurture prospects, and maintain productive client interactions.

How does a sales engagement professional typically collaborate with marketing and sales teams to drive results?

Sales Engagement professionals play a vital role in bridging the gap between sales and marketing teams. They work closely with marketing to ensure messaging, content, and campaigns are aligned with sales goals, and they help sales teams leverage these resources effectively during outreach. Regular collaboration involves joint meetings, sharing feedback on lead quality, and analyzing engagement data to refine strategies. This cross-functional teamwork enhances the customer journey and maximizes conversion rates.

Job Summary:
Outreach is a leading AI platform for revenue teams, founded in 2014. The Director of Product Strategy for Sales Engagement will bridge product development with sales and market positioning, working closely with the Sales Engagement Product team to drive strategy and customer engagement.
Responsibilities:
• Own QBR content and field-facing product updates for Sales Engagement — presenting with depth and conviction
• Serve as the trusted product expert in customer conversations and strategic sales cycles
• Build and maintain crisp, business-oriented product collateral: positioning decks, competitive battlecards, release narratives, and roadmap presentations
• Support analyst relations, investor materials, and board-level content as the voice of Sales Engagement strategy
• Present the roadmap and demo new capabilities at marquee events - including Customer Advisory Boards and industry conferences
• Work closely with the Sales Engagement Product team across time zones, translating market reality into actionable product context and accelerating the evolution into an end-to-end agentic revenue platform.
• Track the market and competitive landscape and customer feedback, translating that into Outreach positioning and roadmap priorities
• Guide pricing and packaging decisions, with evolving pricing models for AI-native products
• Partner with Sales Enablement and Product Marketing to ensure every launch lands accurately and compellingly across the field
• Handle customer escalations as the product voice — triaging issues, aligning with the Product team, and closing the loop with customers and CS
• Lead pilots with high-value customers — structuring the engagement, setting success criteria, and ensuring outcomes feed back into the product roadmap
• Drive adoption and consumption of AI capabilities, partnering with CS and Sales
Qualifications:
Required:
• 8+ years in product management, product strategy, solution consulting, or sales strategy in B2B SaaS
• Proven track record presenting product strategy to Sales leaders and executive audiences — QBRs, EBCs, SKOs, or equivalent
• Experience with AI tools for Sales or GTM; knowledge of Outreach, Salesloft, Apollo, or Gong is a strong plus
• Exceptional communicator — able to make a complex roadmap land clearly with Sales leaders; low-ego and disciplined collaborator across a distributed team
Preferred:
• Background in sales enablement, pre-sales, or revenue operations alongside product experience
• Prior experience at a company navigating a platform transition
