What is a Sailor job?

A Sailor is a maritime professional responsible for operating and maintaining a vessel while at sea. Their duties include navigation support, ship maintenance, cargo handling, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. Sailors work on various types of vessels, including cargo ships, passenger ships, and military vessels. They must be physically fit, adaptable, and skilled in seamanship to handle the challenges of life at sea.

What jobs did sailors do?

Sailors perform tasks such as navigating ships, operating and maintaining equipment, handling cargo, and ensuring safety at sea. They may work on commercial vessels, cargo ships, or naval ships, often requiring knowledge of navigation, seamanship, and safety protocols.

How do you get a job as a sailor?

To become a sailor, you typically need to meet age and physical requirements, complete relevant training such as a maritime academy or onboard apprenticeship, and obtain necessary certifications like a Merchant Mariner Credential or STCW certification. Gaining experience through entry-level positions and demonstrating strong teamwork and safety skills are also important steps.

What are the typical work schedules and living conditions like for Sailors aboard ships?

Sailors often work in rotating shifts to ensure the vessel is staffed around the clock, which can mean working nights, weekends, and holidays depending on the voyage schedule. Onboard living conditions are usually communal, with shared sleeping quarters and facilities, and meals provided by the ship's galley. The work environment can be physically demanding and at times isolated, but it also fosters a strong sense of camaraderie among crew members. Those interested in this role should be comfortable with extended periods away from home and adaptable to life at sea, as voyages can range from days to several months depending on the type of vessel and route.

Do sailors make good money?

Sailors can earn varying salaries depending on their experience, rank, and the type of vessel they work on. Entry-level positions may start around $2,000 to $3,000 per month, while experienced officers can earn over $10,000 monthly. Additional benefits often include room, board, and travel opportunities, but pay scales differ across maritime industries and certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Sailor position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sailor, you need strong seamanship, physical fitness, and a solid understanding of navigation and vessel operations, often supported by a high school diploma and Basic Safety Training certification (such as STCW). Familiarity with maritime communication systems, safety equipment, and deck machinery is typically required. Teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for working in close quarters and responding to emergencies at sea. These abilities ensure safe vessel operation, efficient teamwork, and successful adaptation to the dynamic and sometimes challenging maritime environment.

What are the jobs of a sailor?

A sailor's job involves operating and maintaining ships, navigating routes, handling cargo, and ensuring safety at sea. They perform tasks such as steering, watchkeeping, cleaning, and repairing equipment, often working in shifts and requiring knowledge of safety protocols and maritime regulations.

Job description

About Sailor Health
Sailor Health is revolutionizing the aging experience for older adults, addressing one of the fastest-growing and most underserved healthcare segments in America. With over 60 million seniors expected to make up nearly 25% of the population by 2030, we're entering a period of unprecedented demand for care. Yet, today, millions of older adults remain isolated, underserved, and struggling with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, loneliness without adequate support.
We are a remote but tight-knit team who cares deeply about each other and our mission. Join us on our mission to redefine the golden years, enabling older adults across the nation to live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
About the Role
Title: Executive Assistant to the Founders
Location: NYC (Soho) - 3-5 days in office
At Sailor Health, the founders are deeply hands-on across every function - from clinical operations and payer strategy to hiring, compliance, and product. We're looking for an Executive Assistant to work directly with our co-founders to keep the company running smoothly behind the scenes.
This is our first EA hire, and it goes beyond pure calendar management. You'll be the operational backbone of the founding team - owning scheduling and logistics, running our NYC office, supporting new hires with HR and onboarding workflows, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks as we scale.
If you're excited to be the person who makes everything work at a fast-growing digital health company, we'd love to meet you.
Who You Are
  • You're exceptionally organized with a service-oriented mindset - you take genuine pride in making the people around you more effective.
  • You have impeccable attention to detail and follow-through, and you never let a ball drop.
  • You're proactive by nature - you anticipate needs and solve problems before they surface, rather than waiting to be asked.
  • You respond quickly, communicate clearly, and maintain composure when priorities shift.
  • You understand the weight of confidentiality.
  • You're a fast learner who's genuinely excited to go deep on new domains - whether that's HR compliance protocols, expense management systems, or new operational workflows. You operate independently, figure things out, and move with urgency.
  • Experience in an EA or operations role is a plus, but not required - we're open to recent graduates who are sharp, hungry, and ready to grow alongside the founders of a fast-scaling company.

Your Key Responsibilities
This role moves fast sits at the center of the company, ideal for candidates looking for high-intensity and high-exposure.
  • Support people operations workflows, including onboarding new hires, managing employee records, coordinating benefits enrollment, and tracking compliance items
  • Own both founders' calendars, scheduling, and travel logistics
  • Coordinate team events and culture-building activities that keep our crew happy and connected
  • Own operational workflows in the founders' office end-to-end
  • Manage day-to-day office operations of our NYC office, including supplies, vendor relationships, meal coordination, and maintaining a productive workspace
  • Support the co-founders in preparing materials for internal and external meetings
  • Serve as a key point of contact for the team, triaging requests and communications to the founders and ensuring timely follow-through
  • Handle ad hoc projects and research that support the founders across strategy, operations, and company-building

Why Join Sailor Health
  • Mission with impact. Help bring life-changing care to a population that's too often overlooked.
  • Growth and ownership. Unique opportunity to work directly with the founders of the company, where you'll be exposed to extraordinary growth opportunities.
  • Remote-first team. Enjoy the flexibility of remote work while staying closely connected with a thoughtful, collaborative team rooted in purpose.
  • Make someone's day - every day. Your work helps older adults and their families feel seen, supported, and cared for.

Our Values
  1. Make your Grandparents Proud: Remember why you're here and build the standard of care you wish your grandparents received.
  2. Best Ideas Win: We strip problems down to first principles and challenge each other - but once a decision is made, we row as one.
  3. Go Fast and Far: We have a burning sense of urgency AND we go the extra mile.
  4. Do What It Takes To Be #1: We obsess over excellence and challenge ourselves and each other to actualize our best selves.
  5. โ›ต Happy Crew: A miserable crew rows slow. A happy crew rows fast. Fun is a performance metric.

Our Offer to You
  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental & vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO and sick days
  • Lunch and dinner in our beautiful Soho office covered by Sailor
  • Team building events
  • Friendliest and most dynamic team culture
  • โœšโœš Additional: One Medical Membership for US employees, HSA, Talkspace, HealthAdvocate, Teledoc Health
