Primary Function

Able Seamen, also known as Able Bodied Seamen, perform a variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of a ship, under the direction of the ship's captain or other officers. Able Seamen are primarily responsible for supporting the ship's operations and maintenance, with daily duties and responsibilities. Able Seaman stand as a lookout for the navigational watch and complete engineering rounds while underway.

Essential Duties

  • Performing routine deck operations aboard the ship, such as preparing the ship for departure or arrival
  • Handling lines to moor the vessel to wharfs and to tie up vessels to each other
  • Operating and maintaining deck machinery, such as winches and hoists
  • Inspecting, maintaining, and securing cargo in compliance with load restrictions and damage prevention
  • Maintaining the ship's surfaces by chipping rust, scaling, painting, and performing other maintenance work as necessary
  • Standing watch to look for obstructions in the ship's path, other vessels, and navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses
  • Participating in emergency drills, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, and damage control drills
  • Assisting with the launch and recovery of small boats used by performing routine deck operations aboard the ship, such as preparing the ship for departure or arrival
  • Handling lines to moor the vessel to wharfs and to tie up vessels to each other
  • Operating and maintaining deck machinery, such as winches and hoists

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position normally has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

  • Maritime Knowledge: Proficiency in seamanship, knot tying, line handling, and basic navigation tools such as radar, GPS, and charts
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions, including heavy lifting and long hours
  • Safety Competence: Knowledge of lifesaving equipment, firefighting techniques, and emergency response protocols

Required Qualifications

  • Merchant Mariner Credential
  • National Able Seafarer (AB) Special Deck Rating.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance.
